Witnesseth that the said Jephtha V Smith for and in consideration of the sum of one hundred fifty dollars to him in hand paid the receipt where of is hereby acknowledged have bargined and sold and by these presence doo bargin and sell unto the said Britain Meeks a parcel of land containing Eighty acres more or less. It being the south part of lot and laying in the tenth district originally Troup now Meriwether County and is known and distinguished by the number one hundred and sixty nine of that district having such marks and shape as is represented in a plat of the same to have and to hold the said bargined land and premises with the appurtenances there of, and every part thereof and I the said Jephtha V Smith do warrent and defend the same and every part thereof unto the said Britain Meeks his heirs and assigns forever against all person or persons whatsoever claiming the said land or premises or any part thereof in ______ there of in witness whereof, I the said Jephtha V Smith have here unto set my hand and affix my seal in the day and year above written. Jephtha V Smith (Seal) signed sealed and delivered in the presence of the assignee Lewis Williams Abraham (X) Brooks Georgia \Personally came before me Abraham Brooks and after being Meriwether County\ duly sworn deposeth and saith that he saw Jeptha V Smith assign the within deed and that he also saw Lewis Williams assign said deed as a subscribing witness with himself subscribed and sworn to before me December 24th 1831. Recorded 7th January 1836 Lewis M Adams Clerk Additional Comments: Britain Meeks was born in Pitt County, NC 18 Nov 1763, he subsequently lived in Anson County, NC until 1817 when he moved to Jones County, Georgia. He then lived in Gwinnett Co Georgia until 1831 when he moved to Meriwether County. Over the next twenty years he lived in Meriwether County with some time spent in Floyd County. He died in Meriwether County Georgia between 1 June and 4 September 1850 according to his revolutionary war pension payment voucher. At his death, Britain was living with his son Hosa in Meriwether County, it is thought that he is buried in the area he lived in. The Abraham Brooks that witnessed the deed signing was a son in law of Britain Meeks, having married his daughter Darcus Meeks.
