Moncrief of the County of Layfaett [sic] and State of Mississippi of the One part and Billington M. Leverett of the County of Meriwether and State of Georgia of the other part, Witnesseth that the said John M. Moncrief for and in consideration of the sum of four hundred [the word "dollars" omitted] to him in hand paid at and before the sealing and delivery of these presents the receipt of which is hereby acknowledged hath granted bargained and sold and by these presents doth grant bargain sell and convey unto the said Billington M. Leverett his heirs and assigns all that tract or parcel of land situated lying and being in the County of Troup at the time of Survey now Meriwether in the tenth district of said County known as the north half of lot number one hundred and two containing one hundred one and a fourth acres more or less. To have and to hold said tract or parcel of land unto him the said Billington M. Leverett his heirs and assigns together with all and singular the rights members and appurtenances thereto belonging to his and their own proper use benefit and behoof for ever in fee simple. And the said john M. Moncrief for himself his heirs Executors and administrators the said bargained premises unto the said Billington M. Leverett his heirs and assigns will warrant and for ever defend the right and title thereof against themselves and against the claim or claims of any and all persons whatsoever. Owen hath this (word omitted) relinquished all of my right and claim to one certain parcel of land situate lying and being in the tenth district of formerly Troup now Meriwether County known by the north half of lot No. 102, One hundred and two containing one hundred one and a fourth acres unto the said Billington M. Leverett his heirs & assigns for a valuable consideration. Given under my hand and seal this 29th day of April 1851. B.M. Owen (Seal) Caleb J. Moncrief Moses Almon J.P.} Recorded 13th April 1852 Wm. A. Adams Clk. Additional Comments: The last entry above is Brice Marshall Owen who lived about a mile and a half west of Rocky Mount in Meriwether County, Georgia, where this land is located. There is no record of his having purchased this land. Brice was the son of Uriah Owen who died in Wilkes County, Georgia, in 1820 and named his son Brice and grandson Coleman in his will. Brice, his wife, Sarah Lane (or Law) and son, Coleman P. Owen, arrived in Meriwether sometime before 1840. Brice died sometime between the date this deed was signed (April 29, 1851) and September of 1852 when his wife, Sarah, received goods allowed her by an act for the maintenance of widows. (See Meriweether County probate records, Inventory Appraisal Book D, page 120.) John Moncrief was married to Martha Owen, thought to be daughter of Brice Owen.
