E. and Mrs. K. H. Adams, died suddenly in Greenville last Saturday morning of heart disease at seven years of age; Vol. 5, No. 37, August 31, 1877, page 3 ADAMS, Levi M., Esq., died last Saturday morning at 4 o'clock at his home in Greenville in his sixty ninth year; moved to Greenville about 1828 and became the village's first school teacher in 1929; in 1830 he was elected clerk of Superior court and served uninterruptedly until he retired in 1846; a several paragraph tribute follows; Vol. 4, No. 19, April 28, 1876, page 3; a tribute of respect by the Greenville Lodge, F.A.M. appears in Vol. 4, No. 20, May 5, 1876, page 3 ADAMS, little Tommie, son of Mr. and Mrs. J. E. Adams, died after a brief illness of membranous croup, last Thursday night, aged about one year and eleven months; Vol. 4, No. 37, September 1, 1876, page 3 ALEXANDER, Col. W. D., died on Tuesday at about nine o'clock in Griffin; Col. Alexander grew to manhood in Virginia, settling in Greenville as early as 1830, for he was a delegate from Meriwether to the anti-tariff convention in Milledgeville in 1832; by his practice as a leading member of the Greenville bar he accumulated a large estate, and retiring from the bar he turned his attention to agriculture purchasing property at the Flat Shoals; selling out in Meriwether, he purchased lands across the river in Pike and had recently spent his time in Griffin where he had an office; in the early history of Meriwether he was a leader of the Whig party and was state senator from Meriwether in 1838 and reelected in 1839; he was nearly 75 years of age and was never married; Vol. 7, No. 48, November 11, 1879, page 2 ALLEN, Josiah, at his home in the middle ninth district, on Tuesday the 24th inst., at the age of about 70; Vol. 2, No. 10, February 27, 1874, page 3 ALLEN, little Walter, youngest son of Mrs. Josie Allen, in Greenville on Friday the 25th of July, aged 16 months; Vol.1, No. 34, August 8, 1873, page 3 ALMAND, Moses, died suddenly last Sunday night at his residence near Rocky Mount, from disease of the heart; Vol. 1, No. 27, June 27, 1873, page 3 ANDREWS, Judge Martin, died on Christmas day in the 81st year of his age; the deceased was a native of Wilkes county; Vol. 4, No. 3, January 7, 1876, page 3 ANTHONY, Dr. Joseph W., died on January 2, 1875; Tribute of Respect by the Baptist Church, Greenville, Ga., follows; Vol. 3, No. 10, February 26, 1875, page 3 ANTHONY, Mrs. Martha W., wife of the late J. W. Creed Caldwell, and moved with his parents to Meriwether in 1829; he married Miss Mary M. Phillips, now deceased, three of whose children survive; his second wife was Miss Harriet W. Stribling of Harris county who, with three children including a son of 13, survive; in the fall of 1858 he and his brothers William and David and their families moved to Arkansas; tribute by S. W. Atkinson; Vol. 5, No. 30, July 13, 1877, page 3 DUKES, Benjamin, living on the plantation of Daniel Keith in the Tenth District, shot himself accidentally on Monday the fifth instant; dying from the wound, his friends passed through Greenville on the 14th, carrying his body to Hamilton for interment; Vol. 3, No. 17, April 16, 1875, page 3 ECTOR, Ge. Matthew D., brother of the late Col. Walton Ector and B. B. Ector of the 11th district, died at Tyler, Texas on the 29th of October, aged fifty seven; he grew to manhood in this county and represented Meriwether in the legislature in 1845 and 1846; after the death of his first wife, a sister of Gen. Phillips of Coweta, he removed to California; marrying Miss McClardy of Missouri, he settled in Texas where the war found him in the practce of law; raising a company, he was chosen Lt. Colonel of the 3rd Texas Regiment, being later promoted to the rank of General; engaging in battles in Missouri and Kentucky, in the siege of Atlanta in 1864 he lost a leg and was brought to his old home in Meriwether; having lost his wife, he eventually married Miss Sallie Chew of Mississippi, resumed law practice in Texas, and 3 years ago was made chief justice of the court of appeals of Texas where he was holding court at his death; by his last marriage he left 4 children, the eldest 13 and the youngest an infant; he was buried at his home in Marshall; Vol. 7, No. 48, November 14, 1879, page 3 ELLIS, Mrs. Cornelia May, wife of Robert N. Ellis and daughter of the late Dr. Louis L. and Mrs. C. J. Baggerly along with Masonic Ceremonies; Vol. 6, No. 22, May 17, 1878, page 3 GRANT, Mrs. Lucinda, wife of Gregory Grant of the 11th district, died last Saturday, aged 70; she was for fifty years a member of the Protestant Methodist church; Vol. 7, No. 43, October 10, 1879, page 3 GRESHAM, Judge D. C., of Greenville, died at the asylum at Milledgeville last Monday night; last December he was stricken with paralysis from a stroke and a second stroke resulted in his death; he held numerous county offices and was for 18 years ordinary of the county; Vol. 7, No. 13, March 14, 1879, page 3 HALL, Mrs. Lou, widow of the late Hugh B. Heard, died last Monday, the 7th of July, aged two years and six weeks; Vol. 7, No. 30, July 11, 1879, page 3 HODGE, Mr Ed, (see correction) was struck on the head with a hammer and shot at Rocky Mount a few weeks ago, and is reported to have died from the effects of the blow; Vol. 7, No. 48, November 11, 1879, page 3.
