Gray, aged 79 years, a long time resident of Milam county, died at this home in the Salem community last week and was buried Thursday at Walkers Creek. Mr. Gray fought with Lee in Virginia and was a true and loyal son of the South. In his younger days he was a great athlete and would often walk ten or twelve miles into town rather than ride in any conveyance. He enjoyed true sport and kept his mind active and his body vigorous to a good old age. His death resulted from a fall. ------------------------------------------ ---His name is Emanuel Gray, misspelled on the 1880 census for Troy,Bell County, Texas as "Amauel." (That caused some extra work.) He came to Bell from Meriwether, GA in 1877, as reported to me by another descendent in an email. This is verified by the ages of his two youngest children on the 1880 census. Census shows him at approx 44 yrs. His death certificate provides death date at 11 SEP 1923 and age as 79yrs 2mos and 19 days. I calc. his birthdate as 23 JUL 1844. He was married in Meriwether County on 28 DEC 1866 to MaryAnn McSwain. I'm emailing several gov't. entities to find out where to write for a copy of the marriage certificate also. The Walker's Creek Cemetery is very close to Cameron. It took us about 40 minutes from Belton, and I'll have to get the directions from Nancy Kelsey (genealogist's wife) because even though I drove, I was talking the whole time.
