Lovett. He was a son of the late N. B. Lovett and was born in Meriwether County, Georgia, January the 8th, 1837. He married Julia, youngest daughter of Judge Samuel Darden, May the 9th, 1865. He fought bravely in the war between the states for the Lost Cause, which he loved so well, and during the time he contracted a disease which resulted in his death. In 1865 he joined the M.E. Church, and from that time his conduct in every condition and in all the relations of life failed not to magnify the faith he professed in Christ. John C. Lovett was kind and cordial in feeling, and was a gentleman of marked courtesy and high social qualities. His character was well rounded and well balanced, all its parts in sublimest symetry. He was always ready unto every good word and work, and his pure heart and deep piety fitted him for the noblest service to his fellow- man and to his God. His delight was to be faithful to duty beneath the brightest skies and amid the blackest and most fearful storms of life. His last hours were serene and tranquil, and as the angel of death hovered near him, his hopes were brighter and his faith was stronger in the Everlasting Father. Before his spirit took its flight to the God who sent it, he was asked how was it with him. With a bright smile on his face he cheerfully answered, “It’s all well with me.” What a sweet consolation to his bereaved wife and children! We know the God of all grace and mercy will comfort them through His Holy Spirit. And we say, look not for him in the cold and dark tomb, for he is not there. He is waiting in the House of many mansions for the reception of his loved ones who are still on the shores of time. May his mantle of usefulness fall on the shoulders of his daughter and two sons who will push forward the work of the Master. While we mourn his loss, we rejoice in the hope of his eternal gain, Time may dim this page, but our friend’s good work will stand as an imperishable monument inscribed with memories of him which read like a benediction upon all our hearts. We thank God for his life, his character, was example. His life upon humanity was like the raindrop on the driven snow, it made its mark, but not a stain. While these pages are being read, his voice is sounding along the corridors of eternity praising the God whom he served.
