Smith, 72 years old, a prominent farmer living seven miles east of Greenville, died at 9 o’clock this morning from a dose of morphine, taken it is said, with suicidal intent seven hours before his death. His wife saw him take the dose and asked what it was, he replying that it was purgative. She soon knew by his heavy breathing that there was something serious the matter with him and summoned a physician. The physician arrived about 5 o’clock this morning, and when he reached the bedside, Mr. Smith was in a dying condition. He expired about 9 o’clock. Mr. Smith has been despondent for a long time, and according to his family, had prepared in every way for his death. A few days ago his wife says that she was informed by him that she would be a widow in less than two weeks. His death therefore does not come unexpectedly. Mr. Smith went so far as to get his house in condition for his death and funeral. His monument was carved and erected more than a year ago. He left special instructions for his funeral service. Besides his wife, he is survived by four children, R.O. and W.D. Smith, of Meriwether County; Prof. J.D. Smith, a professor of standing at the Institution at Barnesville and Mrs. John Douglas of Griffin. His funeral will take place here tomorrow morning at 11 o’clock and the interment will be at the Greenville cemetery. Mr. Smith leaves a great number of friends, and his funeral will be attended by many of them. This file has been created by a form at http://www.poppet.org/gafiles/ File size: 2.2 Kb
