Muster Roll of Company D, 27th Regiment, Georgia Volunteer Infantry Army of TN (CSA) The following article, by Mrs. Sybil McRay, special to The Times, was published in "The Daily Times", Gainesville, Georgia, Sunday August 31, 1969, and continued in succeeding edition. We thank Mrs. McRay for granting the USGenWeb Archives Project permission to post her article. Transcribed from family records for the USGenWeb project by William L. Stephenson, Jr. whose great-great-grandfather was a member of the Redwine Muster. [Every attempt has been made in transcription to record information as accurately as possible. Users should reference the appropriate public records for validation of data.] MUSTER ROLL OF CIVIL WAR COMPANY THAT LEFT REDWINE In front of the Redwine Methodist Church on the Poplar Springs Road, Hall County, Ga., is an interesting and important historical marker, placed by the Georgia Historical Commission in commemoration of the brave men who formed a company and left from this church to engage in numerous battles throughout the Civil War. During the four years of fighting this company of 115 men paid a tremendous price in casualties. The message on the historical marker reads: "Co. D, 27th Ga. Inf. Colquitt’s Brigade, C. S. A. organized here in early 1861, fought in Williamsburg, Seven Pines, Seven Days Battles at South Mtn., Md., Sept. 14, 1862, against great odds, men of this company withstood four attacks from a heavy force of Federals, in a great display of bravery. Later they fought at Antetam, Fredericksburg, Chancellorsville, Charleston. At Olustee, Fla., Feb. 29, 1864, they helped drive the Federals from Florida until Lee’s arrival, they helped hold in check Grant’s army at Petersburg, Va. They fought last at Bentonville, N. C. and surrendered at Durham, N. C. April 26, 1865." The following list of names composed this company. Information in parenthesis is added data, which was found while searching courthouse records. NOTE: When the record shows no information other than "private" it usually means that the p[erson was present for one of the roll calls and there was no further information. In the last days of fighting everything was in a chaotic state, and records were difficult to keep. Many times a man would become lost from his own company and join another group and keep fighting. The men reported as surrendering were still with the same company at the close of the war. In the Redwine Methodist Cemetery is a large monument inscribed with words that are most inspirational. The message is one that should make each Hall Countian, having an ancester enlisted in Co. D, 27th Regt. Ga. Inf., proud of his heritage. The wives of these brave men are also given due honor with an inscription as a memorial to their courage. MONUMENT TO HONOR THE BRAVE Co. D. 27th Georgia Regiment 1861 - 1865 C. S. A. "These were men whom power could not corrupt, whom death could not terrify, whom defeat could not dishonor. They were faithful to the teachings of their fathers, died in performance of duty and have glorified a fallen cause." "To the women of the Confederacy whose truth, constancy and loyalty shall remain unto them and their children as a crown of glory and a diadem of beauty." ==================================================================== USGENWEB NOTICE: In keeping with our policy of providing free information on the Internet, data may be used by non-commercial entities, as long as this message remains on all copied material.
