Walthour "Liberty Independent Troop" - Company G Company H 5th Regiment Georgia Volunteer Cavalry "THE LAMAR RANGERS" "Captain Brailsford's Mounted Rifles" Bugler Company Captain William Brailsford, Commanding OFFICERS & STAFF Captain William BRAILSFORD, son of Daniel Howard BRAILSFORD and Jane Martin Leak SPALDING, was born in McIntosh County, Georgia, in 1826. Twenty-three year old William is listed in the 1850 McIntosh Census as a Planter. He entered Confederate service as a 1st Lieutenant in the Savannah Mounted Rifles, 7 Jun 1861, at Sunburry, Georgia. On 1 Sep 1861, William BRAILSFORD succeeded Captain Lamar as commander. The company was then known as CAPTAIN BRAILSFORD’S COMPANY, 1ST GEORGIA CAVALRY BATTALION. His Sutherland’s Bluff Plantation became headquarters for the Lamar Rangers during the early part of the war. From its vantage point on the Sapelo River, they could observe the Yankee vessels in Doboy and Sapelo Sounds. On 20 Jan 1863, the company became Company H, 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry Regiment. Captain Brailsford commanded the unit through some of the wars fiercest fighting. On 6 Sep 1864, while on the Tennessee/Virginia Incursion, Captain Brailsford was captured by Federal Forces near Murfreesboro, Tennessee. He was transported to and was confined at Johnson’s Island Ohio Union Prison Camp. He was released on 30 May 1865, and returned to Georgia. He died 29 Jun 1887.[Thomas D. WYLLY, son of Alexander W. and Elizabeth S. WYLLY, was born in McIntosh County on 5 Jan 1833. Alex is listed as being 17 years old in the 1850 McIntosh County census. He entered service as as a 1st Lieutenant in Captain Hopkins' Company in Oct 1861. At reorganization in April 1862, Alex enlisted and was elected 1st Lieutenant in Captain William BRAILSFORD's Company. 1st Lieutenant Wylly transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. HURST 1st Sergeant John C. SMITH (SMYTH) 1st Sergeant John R. MIDDLETON, son of Robert and Elizabeth (Howard) Middleton, was born ca 1825 in McIntosh County Georgia. He owned a plantation near Bobtown in now Long County Georgia. John married Celia (?) 1855. She was born 20 Aug 1834 and died 20 Mar1876. She is buried in Middleton Memorial Cemetery in now Long County Georgia. He was the brother of Dr. Jim Middleton of Bobtown, who practiced medicine in the lower part of Liberty County for years. [FAM REC -Tommy D. Houston] 2nd Sergeant Walter S. KING Sergeant (Dr.) Warren JOHNSON, MD 4th Sgt. Alexander D. McINTOSH enlisted in April 1862 in Captain Brailsford’s Mounted Rifles, 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion. He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. He was detailed to find horses in 1864, and was cut off from command, which was on a raid in Tennessee at the time. He was in Montgomery County, Georgia at the time of the surrender. BARNARD enlisted in the 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 11 Jul 1862. On 20 Jan 1863, he transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry. Jonathan was wounded in Tennessee in late Oct 1864 and was sent to South Georgia for 60 days on a wounded furlough. He recovered in Mar 1865 and attempted to reach his company. Jonathan was captured by Yankee pickets, but escaped the same night. He was unable to reach his command. He was born in 1844, and died in 1930. Jonathan is buried in the Antioch Baptist Church cemetery in Evans County, Georgia. [ITS] George BLACKBURN John H. CANNON enlisted in Captain William Brailsford’s Company of the 1st Georgia Battalion. He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry on January 20, 1863. His ankle was broken when his horse fell on him near Macon, Georgia in 1864. Private Cannon was surrendered at Hillsboro, North Carolina, in April 1865. John H. CARTER Thomas CHASTAIN, son of Thomas and Pricilla CHASTAIN, was born in 1844, in Georgia. Six year old Thomas is found in the 1850 Thomas County Census. EASTERLING William EASTERLING James Allen EZELL was born in Sampson County, North Carolina, on 18 Sep 1831. According to pension records, he enlisted in Captain Brailsford's Company on 15 July 1862. He Transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry Cavalry on 20 Jan 1863. He was home at Thomasville, Georgia at the close of the war due to disability. Other records show him on duty south of the Altamaha River at the close of the war. Private James Allen EZELL was "Honorably Discharged" at Thomasville, Georgia, in May 1865. James Allen EZELL married Thirza R. DYAL on 28 Jan 1883, in Wakulla County, Florida. James and Thirza lived in Arran, Florida. KEATON Alexander Baillie Kell, son of John KELL and Marjorie Spalding BAILLIE, was bund listed as being a twenty-one year old Planter in the 1850 McIntosh County Census. He 3rd Lieutenant in Captain Octavius Caesar HOPKINS’ Company, also known as the McIntosh light Dragoons. At reorganization in May 1862, he enlisted in Captain William Brailsford's Lamar Rangers at Sutherland Bluff, which later mustered in as Company H 5th Georgia Volunteer Cavalry CSA on 20 Jan 1863. Private Kell served with Company H until the end of the war. He died on 30 Sep 1912, aged 84 years. LUCUS enlisted as a private in Company G, 1st Regiment "Bainbridge Independents", on March 18, 1861. He was mustered out at Augusta, Georgia on. March 18, 1862 . He then enlisted as a private in Captain Brailsford's Company, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry, on May 19, 1862. W. H. Lucus transferred to Company H, 5th Regiment Ga. Cavalry on January 20, 1863 . McLOUD Alexander Goodby MIDDLETON, son of Alexander Goodby Middleton and Mary Townsend was born in McIntosh County Georgia on 11 April 1826. He enlisted as a private in Captain Brailsford’s Company of the 2nd Georgia Cavalry Battalion in 1862, and transferred to Company H (Lamar Rangers) of the 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 January 1863. [FAM -REC - Tommy D. Houston] EXPANDED SKETCH Charles Lawson Middleton, son of Alexander Goodby Middleton and Mary Townsend was born in McIntosh County Georgia on 4 July 1837. Lawson enlisted in the Confederate Army in September 1861 as a Private in Captain Lamar’s Company of the 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion, at Darien, Georgia. Although the record is incomplete, he does not appear on on any muster rolls for the Lamar Rangers, Company H of the 5th Georgia Cavalry. Hopkins’ Company on October 31,1861, as 4th Sergeant. He transferred to Company H , 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 January 1863, and served throughout the war in this unit. He then enlisted as a private in Company K, 5th Regiment, Georgia Cavalry 15 Aug 1863. He transferred to Company H. Roll dated 31 Dec 1864 , last on file, shows him on special duty. No later record. SWINDLE Brantley TAIT enlisted as a private in Captain Brailsford's Mounted Rifles, and was transferred to Company B, 5th GA Regiment Cavalry on 16 May 1863. He was listed as deserted on 23 Jun 1863. Family records indicate he never came back home to his land or to his new bride, Martha Ann who he married one year before enlisting. She remarried in 1870 in Thomas County, Georgia. I believe him to have been killed or died of sickness. [FAM REC - Dixie Tait Kirton] Edmund TODD J. M. TODD William TODD enlisted in Company C, 1st Georgia Cavalry Battalion on 10 Apr 1862. He transferred to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry Regiment on 20 Jan 1863. According to pension records, he was taken from camp at the Isle of Hope, Georgia, to a Confederate Hospital in Savannah, Georgia in July 1863. He is listed as died in hospital at Savannah, Georgia on or about 15 Jul 1863. He is buried in Savannah, Georgia. [GSU-PEN] Aquilla WEATHERS Edward WEATHERS record Solomon WILKES (WEEKS ?) H. W. WILKINSON Gabriel WILSON, son of Allen WILSON and Mary HURST, was born 17 Feb 1824, in Effingham County, Georgia, died 16 Jul 1868, in Thomas County, Georgia, while Sheriff of Thomas County. Twenty-six year old Gabriel is listed in the household (visit 148) of his father, Allen WILSON, in the 1850 Thomas County Census. On 19 May 1862, Gabriel enlisted in the Lamar Rifles, 1st Battalion Georgia Cavalry. At that time the company was stationed at Sutherlands Bluff, Georgia. He transferred 20 Jan 1863 to Company H, 5th Georgia Cavalry. Listed as "sick” in General Hospital, Savannah 26 Oct 1863. He was present with the Company at surrender 26 Apr 1865. He was paroled 3 May 1865 at Hillsboro, North Carolina. "Got home from the War on 28 May 1865." Gabriel WILSON married Susan FULFORD 3 Oct 1850. Susan FULFORD was a sister of Gabriel’s fathers’ third wife. He is buried in the old cemetery in the City of Thomasville west of the Court House. NOTE: Florida Pension Application # A11210 was filed in Polk County, Florida in 1903; Susan FULFORD is listed as his wife. Both Private A. F. Listed as Absent Without Leave in Nov 1864. Is listed as being "with wagon train near Greensboro", North Carolina, at time of surrender.
