The following is one such letter written by my ancestor James Loftin. Found in the Baker County Box in Special Collections Division at the Georgia Department of Archives and History in Atlanta (1516 Peachtree St., N. W., Atlanta, Georgia). [old citation] Baker County Georgia 7th December - 1835 To/Governor Wm. Schley ------------------------ Dear Sir I take an oppertunity, to inform you of the outrages committed on one the citizens of Baker Co, -- and our Property. Since you had any account from this County there has been some seven or eight head of horses Stolen from my neighbors in this County and Early near the Baker line - Sir two Persons Shot at, and a young man on business in the Settlement the other boy in his Fathers Yard the ball shot at the latter passed through his hat. A number of the citizens from Seventy to Eighty embodied and strove to detict them but all in vain - the swamps to the water corses being so verry extensive and the volunteers so few that we can not Protect ourselves and Property. We as your fellow citizens, Consteuents Supporters of the sam cause; defenders of our Rights; anxious to enjoy freedom and liberty at home; Pray for your aid - knowing that unless we get assistence - that not only our property will be taken; but the lives of our wifes and children be endandered as infact is all redy the case or give up our lands and be driven into Such inconvincences, Wile Government Side of the Chattahoochee River is our invaders, it is that Savage People who terrifies us; and Steals our offects while we sleep - reach out your hand of Protection in this time of our distress. After subscribing to this Petition I am authorized to assign as many Gentlemens names who volunteerd their Services in this Scout as I can recollect.
