A party of fifteen citizens immediately assembled, and attacked the Indians, but after a few fires the whites retired before the superior numbers of the marauders, having two men wounded. It is not known what was the Indian loss on the occasion. The governor has isued orders to the colonel of militia in the county of Stewart, to take the requisite steps for defending the people, until the legislature shall act on the subject. It is probable that the Indians immediately recrossed the Chattahoochie. It appears to us, that the chiefs of the neighboring Creek towns in Alabama, must know what Indians composed the party, and that it will not be very difficult to identify at least a portion of them. It is important that a strong example should be made of those who dare to disturb the peace of the State, and to murder one of her citizens.
