Charles Murphey Candler’s historical address to the DeKalb County Centennial Celebration at Decatur, Georgia on November 9, 1922, he included a referenced to the names of some of the citizens who participated in the Creek Indian War of 1836. Believing this might be of some assistance to you in your endeavor I have included below that part of his address. The first regularly organized military company in the County, as distinguished from the militia, was the "Volunteer Light Infantry," incorporated by Act of the Legislature approved December 22nd, 1835. On call of the Governor for volunteers in the Creek Indian War of 1836, this Company responded and was sent to the Southwestern part of the State where fighting was in progress and in which it engaged with a few casualties. It left Decatur 84 strong, under the following Officers: Captain E. N. Calhoun; First Lieutenant C. W. McGinnis; Second Lieutenant Sam Binion; Ensign John L. Towers; Orderly Sergeant John Jones (later made Captain on the promotion of Capt. Calhoun); Orderly Sergeant John W. Fowler. On its departure the ladies of Decatur presented the Company with a flag. About this time Captain James M. Calhoun, a brother of Captain E. N. Calhoun, organized a Volunteer Cavalry Company, but I have been unable to ascertain if it got to the front. ______FROM______ clarence@atkins.net Clarence Atkins ================================= Galileo http://www.galileo.usg.edu/ ACTS OF THE GENERAL ASSEMBLY OF THE STATE OF GEORGIA, PASSED IN MILLEDGEVILLE AT AN ANNUAL SESSION IN NOVEMBER AND DECEMBER, 1835.
