COLE, MONROE W. Capt. Fowler, Col. Turk, Georgia Volunteers Private Cherokee Removal In 1830 Congress passed the "Indian Removal Act." The Treaty of New Echota in 1835, gave President Jackson the legal document he needed to removed the Cherokee. General Winfield Scott, arrived at New Echota on May 17, 1838. Local operations at New Echota began on May 18, mostly carried out by Georgia Guard under the command of Colonel William Lindsey. The roundup was completed on June 2, 1838. COLE'S CLAIM FOR INDIAN WARS PENSION Claim of Widow for Service Pension Under Act of July 27, 1892 State of Georgia County of Coweta On this 9 day of December A. D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety-three, personally appeared before me W. H. Persons, Ordinary within and for the county and State aforesaid, Nancy J. Cole aged 65 years, a resident of Coweta County, in the State of Georgia, who being duly sworn according to law, declares that she is the widow of Monroe W. Cole, deceased, as a Private in the company commanded by Capt. John W. Fowler in the Cherokee War; that her said husband enlisted at Decatur, DeKalb County, Ga. on or about the 1 day of April A. D. 1838, and was discharged at (can't read but looks like Noutown near Rome, Ga., the record on the previous page lists New Echota, Ga.) on the 10th day of July A. D. 1838; that he was not otherwise employed in the military or naval service of the United States. That at the time of entering the service claimed for, her said husband was 20 years of age, 5 feet 10 inches in height, with brown eyes, black hair, little dark complexion, by occupation a farmer, and that he was born in the County of Pittsylvania, State of Virginia. That after leaving the service he resided in Gwinnett County, 5 years & in Coweta County, Ga., until he died. That she married to him on 2nd day of November A. D. 1852 in Coweta County by Robert Fleming, a minister of the Gospel under the name of Nancy J. Russell; that he had not been previously married. That her said husband died near Turin, Ga., on the 28th day of November A. D. 1893. That she has not made application for bounty land; that her husband did make application for pension, the number of his claim being 917; that he did make application for bounty land, the number of his warrant being unknown. That she being a citizen of the United States, and makes this application for the purpose of obtaining a pension under the provision of the act approved July 27, 1892; and hereby appoints W. H. Persons of Newnan, Ga., her true and lawful attorney. That her post office address is Turin, Coweta County, State of Georgia. Attest Nancy J. Cole A. C. Russell (Signature of claimant in full) F. F. Hunter Also personally appeared A. C. Russell, aged 68 years, residing at Turin, Ga. in Coweta County and F. F. Hunter, aged 68 years, residing at Turin, Georgia in Coweta County, persons whom I certify to be respectable and entitled to credit, and who, being by me duly sworn, say that they have known the said Nancy J. Cole 64 years and 56 years, respectively; that they were present and saw her sign her name to the foregoing declaration; that they have every reason to believe, and do believe from the appearance of the claimant, and from their personal acquaintance with her, that she is the identical person she represents herself to be; and they further say they are fully satisfied that she is the person who was the wife of the identical Monroe W. Cole who rendered the service alleged in the above application (in the company of Capt. John W. Fowler, in the Cherokee War; by the following named facts and lived near her for fifty-six years.
