Wood, E. =================== Executive Department March 28th, 1838 To Captain John Shackelford Sir: Your letter___by Express enclosing an election return of a volunteer company of Franklin County designed for the Cherokee service has been received ____by the hands of Mr. Mitchell. I regret very much that the Governor is unwell and ___therefore unable to___cannot answer you personally. I am directed by His Excellency to say to you that the requisition made upon him by the President of the U. States for eleven volunteer companies for the Cherokee service to be drawn from other counties than those in the Cherokee country has been filled. Orders have now been issued to eleven companies to march into the Cherokee counties and there is now no demand for your services. Accept the compliments of the Governor for the cheerful tender you have made of the services of yourself and company. Your most obedient servant, D. W.
