Tuggle, James was born in Pendleton District, (s/o son of John Tuggle Sr) S.C. 1793 and died in Gwinnett Co, GA in early 1873. He married c1826 Mary Wilson (b. S.C. 1805, d/o John Wilson). James Tuggle was a planter in Gwinnett from beflore 1830, living in Cains District near the Hall County line. In 1837 the Cherokee Indians, who claimed all the territory north of the Chattahoochee River, and who set up an independent nation siilar to the United States, finally were induced to sign a treaty and agree to go on an assigned territory beyond the Mississippi. Their removal in 1838 was an event of national importance. The Indian population was about 15,000 and the U.S. Army was given the job of directing the migratin from Georgia to their western homes. Gwinnett County was required to furnish two Companies of volunteers to assist in guarding and protecting the Indians as well as the inhabitants along the route of the migratory throng. The following letter appears in the Georgia Archives: Georgia, Gwinnett Co. Feb 7, 1838 "To Your Excellency - Geo. T. Gilmer: Sir: "I received yesterday your letter which informed me that your Excellency has the offer of two infantry Companys to fill the Call of Col Lindsey and on this day had a muster and informed the Company the contents of your letter, which the Company all agreed to stand in rediness agreeable to your request. The only objection they had against standing in Rediness was that they wished to joing the comany which would be first received in to service. This objection now appears to be entirely removed by believing that this Company being in Rediness would be as soon Received as any other mounted Company. We forward this information to your Excellence and submit the case. I am Sir, your most obedient, James Tuggle
