Hopkins Family Men in the War of 1812 (from the southern states) Compiled by Harold C. Hopkins [from National Archives microfilm listing those who served under surname HOPKINS.] This list appears to include dual or triple listings of some soldiers who served in more than one military organization, held more than one rank, and served in some cases under more than one commander; it's also conceivable that some served under names other than their own as substitutes for men who had been drafted. It would be helpful if we knew the areas of the various states that supplied the men for each of the state militia units. Some regiments and other units apparently had successive commanders and the listing gives their names with titles--usually lieutenant colonel. Rank was not normally listed on the entry cards for a regimental commander if he held command for the entire period the unit served. When rank is not stated, it was either omitted from the National Archives card files, or missed by this compiler. Some abbreviations: LC = lieutenant colonel Mtd = mounted art'y = artillery Vols = volunteers Regt = regiment Bttn = battalion Det = detachment Most other abbreviations are standard. It should be noted that these are military records only, not pension and land bounty records, for which National Archives maintains a separate file. Many of the men shown on this roster never applied for a pension or a land bounty, often having died before subsequent legislation entitled them to such benefits or because they did not serve -- or could not proved they had served -- the minimum six months necessary to obtain these benefits. Thus this record shows many individuals whose names and those of their survivors do not appear in the list of applications for pension or land bounties. A study of this roster suggests that many more of our kinsmen served in this war than I had thought, and we should certainly try to identify those such as the Dennis from Tennessee and the Dennis or Denny and the Elijah who served from Kentucky, and other familiar names. Some Marylanders are listed because of this compiler's special interest in their given names. Two New Yorkers named Mark Hopkins are listed here to show that they were possible relatives of a Mark Hopkins (1816-1878) of New York who made a fortune in California during and after the Gold Rush [some members of the Hopkins families in North Carolina -- who sought to inherit money from Mark Hopkins's estate after his death in 1878 -- went to court with a claim that this Mark Hopkins was not from New York, but was from a North Carolina Hopkins family]. It should be kept in mind that some of these southerners campaigned mainly against the British in the eastern, mid- Atlantic and near-midwest states, while others were engaged against the Indian allies of the British such as the Red Stick faction of the Creek Indians. This included retaliatory responses to Indian raids and massacres on American settlements. Still others marched against both the Indians and the British forts or outposts in Florida and elsewhere and took part in the decisive Battle of New Orleans.
