L. Lewis, who shot H. H. McCook on the streets of Colquitt October 1, was sentened to serve fifteen years in the penitentiary here today in superior court. He was found guilty of voluntary man-slaughter. Lewis, a barber, was formerly of Moultrie. He killed McCook, who was from Albany, over a debt due Lewis. Mrs. Lewis and her baby were standing a short distance away at the time of the shooting. There were a number of eye witnesses to the shooting, as the streets were crowded at the time. Lewis claimed that he shot in self defense, stating that McCook caught him and apparently reached for his hip pocket, but a search of the dead man's clothes revealed no weapon. The debt over which the shooting occurred was $8.
