O. Shepard Passes August 6 News of the passing of James Oscar Shepard, Sr., 83, saddened Miller Countians this week. He died Sunday, August 6, 1972, he had walked away from the house, as he did frequently, and when he failed to return his daughter, Mrs. Marie Kimbrel, who resided with her father, requested help in locating him. His body found approximately two miles from the house. It was reported he died of natural causes. Mr. Shepard was born, reared, and lived his entire life here in this county. He was born March 26, 1889, he was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. William B. Shepard, pioneer and influential citizens of Miller County. "Mr. Oscar," as he was called by friends attended the schools of this county and he married Miss Eula Alice Rooks, who preceded him in death about four years ago. He was a member of Colquitt Baptist Church, a retired farmer and pulpwood operator. He and his wife reared a large family in the same community in which he was born and reared, just a few miles north of Colquitt on the Old Damascus Road. He was positive in nature, honest, industrious, and he was never too tired or busy to help those who needed him. The tradition liberty and freedom was deep-rooted in his makeup. He was free of sham and hypocrisy and his actions were based on what he thought about a thing rather that what someone else thought. He was a good father, neighbor and friend. Funeral services were held from Colquitt First Baptist Church Tuesday afternoon with the Reverend Ralph Norman, pastor, and the Reverend W. K. Thompson officiating. Interment was in Shepard Cemetery. Pallbearers were grandsons, Michael, Danny, and Jimmy Shepard, John Stewart, Gary Dobson and Otis Lane. Survivors include five sons, Clark Shepard and J. O. Shepard, Jr., of Colquitt, Calvin Shepard, Macon, Stanley Shepard, Leary, and Steve Shepard, Starksville, Miss., three daughters, Mrs. Marie Kimbrel, Colquitt; Mrs. Wayne Dobson, Greenville, Tenn., Mrs. John L. Stewart, Richland; one brother, Bill Shepard, Leary, two sisters, Mrs. Roy Pullen, Damascus, and Mrs. Hazel Hudspeth, Blakely, 23 grandchildren and 15 great-grandchildren.
