Willie Wayne Newberry, 68, was born February 9, 1934, delivered by his great aunt on the family farm in Colquitt, Ga. He passed away after a long stay at the Seattle Veteran's Hospital on March 1, 2002. The son of Benjamin Chason Newberry and Laura Maude Newberry, Wayne grew up on the farm, where the family produced peanuts, cotton and corn and also raised hogs. He graduated from nearby Jakin High in 1951, the n in 1952 began a seven-year stint in the U.S. Army, where he acquired corporal status. Wayne's talents and interst in cooking and gardening no doubt stemmed from his years on the farm. After his military service, he went into the grocery business, elevating to store manager of Winn-Dixie in Miami, Fla. He would later work at grocery stores in Donalsonville, Ga., Lakewood, Wash., Sunnyside, Wash., and Lynnwood, Wash. Wayne was an outstanding cook and later worked in that profession. Wayne is survived by his brother, Horace Broughton Newberry of Richmond Hill, Ga.,; his daughters, Beccie Newberry and Angela Schmidt, and sons, Wayne Newberry and Ron Newberry, all of Lakewood, Wash. He leaves behind eight grandchildren. Wayne was preceded in death by his parents, his former wife, Marion Newberry, his brothers, Benjamin Hoyt Newberryand Clarence Lang Newberry and his sister, Veda Maxine Reese. The family held a private committal service for Wayne at Tahoma National Cemetery in Kent, Washington, on March 13. The family is grateful for the excellent care provided by VA hospitals in Seattle and Lakewood as well as Madigan Army Medical Center near Tacoma, Washington.
