He pulled the trigger with a bare toe, having removed his shoes. He attempted to kill his wife, shooting at her five times with a Colts pistol. He also tried to kill his oldest daughter, who was picking cotton in the field near by. He is said to have been insanely drunk. The rest of the children were at school.
