What is your name & where do you reside? B M Hardman, Dinsmore, Milton County, Ga. 2. Where did you reside on January 1st, 1894 and how long have you been a resident of this State? Milton County, Ga 3. When and where were you born? Born 1824 4. Did you volunteer in the Confederate Army or in the Georgia Militia? Confederate Army 5. When and where did you enlist? Feb. 5, 1862 Skidway Island, Ga 6. In what company and regiment did you enlist at? "B" 38 regiment 7. How long did you remain in that company and regiment till 13 day of May 1865. 8. If you were discharged from same and joined another, or if you were transferred to another, give an account of such discharge or transfer? No. 9. For how long a period did you discharge regular military duty? Over 3 years. 10. When, where and under what circumstances were you discharged from service? I was paroled on the 15 of May 1863 in Atlanta, Ga. 11. What is your present occupation? Can't do anything except split a few boards and job out a little. 12. How much can you earn per annum by your own exertions or labor? $10.00 13. What has been your occupation since 1865? Farming & work about farm often not able to do anything 14. What sum would be necessary for your support for this pension year, and how much are you able to contribute thereto either in labor or income? $72.00 $10.00 15. What is your present physical condition and how long have you been in such condition? I am 71 years old, & my right knee joint is dislocated, I contracted chronic diarrhea in the war and am suffering with it yet. 16. Upon which of the following grounds do you base your application for pension? Age and infirmity 17. If upon the first ground, state how long you have been in such condition that you could not earn your support? Five years. As I stated above, I am 71 years old. My right knee is dislocated from rheumatism contracted in the war. am infirm and suffering from diarrhea contracted during war. 18. What property, effects or income do you possess? Nothing 19. What property, effects or income did you possess in 1893 & 1894 . . .? Nothing 20. In what county did you reside during those years and what property did you then return for taxation? Milton County, Ga. 21. How were you supported during the years 1893 and 1894? By what little I could make by hoing cotton and by the charity of friends and my son in law. 22. How much did your support cost for each of those years, and what portion did you contribute thereto by your own labor or income? I suppose $70 or $75. $10.00 perhaps. 23. What was your employment during 1893 and 1894? What pay did you receive in each year? Any little job of work I could get among my neighbors such as splitting boards and chopping cotton. 24. Are you married and have you a family? If so, is your wife living and how many children have you? I have a 2d wife and children but we live separate. I live with my married daughter. 25. Are you receiving a pension under any law of this State? No. Sworn to and subscribed before me this the 18 day of April 1895. B M Hardman applicant P P McCleskey, Ordinary Of Milton County Questions for Witness State of Georgia Milton County J W Walker of said State and county, having been presented as a witness in support of the application of B M Hardman for pension...... 1. What is your name and where do you reside? J W Walker reside in Milton County, Ga. 2. Are you acquainted with B M Hardman the applicant if so how long have you known him. Over 30 years. 3. Where does he reside and how long has he been a resident of this state. In milton County, Ga. ever since I knew him. 4. Do you know of his having served in the Confederate army . . . ? How do you know this? He served in the Army. I know it from having served with him in the same Company. 5. When, where and in what company and regiment did he enlist? in 1862, at Skidway Island in Ga. in Co "B" 38 regiment. 6. Were you a member of the same company and regiment? Yes. 7. How long did he perform regular military duty and what do you know of his service as a Confederate soldier, and the time and circumstances of his discharge from the service? he served over 6 months he went in the service in Feby 1862. I was wounded in Dec. 1862 and did not return to this command any more. 8. What property, effects or income has the applicant. Nothing. I know it because I have known him ever since the war I know his circumstances. 9. What property, effects or income did the applicant possess in 1893 and 1894 and what disposition if any, did he make of same. If he had anything I don't know it. he made no disposition. 10. What is the applicant's occupation and physical condition? he is getting old and is crippled in right leg. 11. Is the applicant unable to support himself by labor of any sort, if so why? I don't know of anything at which he could make a living. 12. How was he supported during the years 1893 and 1894? He lived with his children and hired around a little. 13. What portion of his support for these two years was derived from his own labor or income? don't know. it could not have been much. 14. Give a full and complete statement of the applicant's physical condition that entitles him to a pension under the Act of December 15th 1894? he is getting old and feeble, cripple in right leg and is not able to work. 15. What interest have you in the recovery of a pension by this applicant? None. Sworn to and subscribed before me this ..... J W Walker Affidavit of Physicians State of Georgia Milton County Personally came before me G B Thomason and L L Clement, both known to me as reputable physicians of said county, who being severally sworn, say on oath that they have examined carefully B M Hardman applicant for pension under the Act of 1894 and after such personal examination say that his precise physical condition is as follows: Rheumatism in right knee which causes enlargement and the knee is drawn out of joint and leg is drawn forward and outward at an angle of about 25 degrees which renders him unable to walk without a stick. We Further say on oath that . .. . Sworn to and subscribed before me, this the 18 day of April 1895. G B Thomason L L Clement P D McCleskey, ordinary Ordinary's Certificate State of Georgia Milton County I P D McCleskey, Ordinary in and for said County, hereby certify that the applicant B M Hardman resides in said County and was a bonafide resident of this State on the first day of January, 1894 and that the witnesses, viz: G B Thomason, L F Chandler [sic] & J W Walker are of trustworthy character and that their statements are entitled to full faith and credit. . . . I further certify that the tax digests of Milton County show that the applicant returned for taxation in his name in 1893 no dollars and property and in 1894 no dollars of property. Witness my hand and seal of office, this 11 day of May 1895. P D McCleskey Ordinary of P D McCleskey county [sic] For Applicants Heretofore Allowed Pensions State of Georgia Milton County Personally appears B M Hardman of Milton County, State of Georgia, who being duly sworn, says on oath that he is a bona fide citizen and resident of said County and State, and has resided in said State continuously ever since the 26 day of July 1824; that he is 76 years old and by occupation a farmer that he enlisted in the military service of the Confederate State during the war between the States and served for the term of 3 years in company B, of 38th Regiment of Georgia Volunteers; that his physical condition is as follows: suffering with rheumatism through my body and in all my limbs with my right knee dislocated from the effects of rheumatism. that his property condists of the following items: no property at all. ..... I have herefore as a resident of Milton county been allowed a pension for the year 1900. Sworn to and subscribed before me, this the 4th day of Jany 1901.
