Billy was the eldest son of Daniel McCollum (1760-1850). Billy served in the War of 1812 in Captain Benjamin Goss's company of Colonel Austin's regiment of the South Carolina militia. He enlisted on February 1, 1815 and was discharged on March 24, 1815 eight days short of the 60 days needed to qualify for a pension. His application was rejected for this reason. His place of enlistment was Pendleton District South Carolina and his place of discharge was Sister's Ferry in that district. He filed his application in 1871 from Milton County, Georgia where he said he lived five miles north of Alpharetta. The document indicated that he married Susannah Miller on or about June 10, 1810 in Pendleton County South Carolina. Susannah is buried in the Old Blue Creek Baptist Chruch Cemetery in White County, Georgia beside her father-in-law, Daniel. Billy married his second wife, Esther Edwards, in 1826. Esther is buried beside him at Providence.
