REV. CURTIS NELMS REV. CURTIS NELMS was born 1795 in North Carolina and died in Mitchell County, Georgia. On June 23, 1821 in Laurens County, Georgia, he married MARY FAIRCLOTH. She was born 1803 in Virginia or North Carolina (conflicting information, some records state Virginia, others state North Carolina). She died January 15, 1861 in Mitchell County, Georgia. Both are buried at Mt. Enon Church at Gum Pond, Lester, near Baconton, Georgia. MARY FAIRCLOTH NELMS was the first person to be buried in that cemetery and over time, their tombstones have been lost. When Mt. Enon members purchased a display plaque to list deceased members on plates to be installed on it, two of the descendents of CURTIS AND MARY, LOUISE JORDAN and LAVERNE CARTER, purchased a plate for each of them to be hung on the plaque listing their names and dates since their burial spaces in the cemetery were unknown and the markers gone. This plaque is available to be seen at Mt. Enon and they are also listed on the Mt. Enon Cemetery Record on inter-net in Mitchell County, Georgia cemetery records. The last name, NELMS, has been found to be spelled with several variations, Nellams, Nellums, Nillems, Neloms, etc. 1784-1786 Census of Sampson County, North Carolina NELMS, GEORGE 300 acres 1 white person 0 black persons NELMS, FRANCIS 590 acres 1 white person 0 black persons 1790 Census Sampson County, North Carolina NELMS, EDMUND 1 white male over 16, 1 white male under 16. 2 white females. In 1857, that part of Baker County where Rev. Curtis and his family lived became Mitchell County when the new county of Mitchell was created. The given name of Curtis's mother is not known. It is spelled so differently on the records listing her. Perhaps it was supposed to be Ethelina and was shortened to Lina. This is not a fact but a few of her female descendents were named Ethelina. I suppose we'll never know for sure. According to the 1830 Laurens County, Georgia census, she would have been born 1760-1770.
