Times April 10, 1974 Mrs. Florence Avent, a resident of Upson County for the past 30 years, was honored with a dinner at Zion Chapel Church in Thomaston on her 90th April 7. She is the mother of four children of which one is Mrs. C. H. Adair with whom she has made her home all these years. There were 21 grandchildren, 44 great grand-children, and 3 great great grandhcildren present for the occasion. Descendents, relatives and friends attended from 5 different states and 11 towns in Georgia. The social hall was beautifully decorated in pink, green and white. Burning pink tapers graced each dining table and pink floral arrangements were placed in the windows. The three tiered birthday cake was made and decorated by Mrs. Avent's cousin, Miss Mildred Pelham of Cairo, Georgia. Cascades of pink roses adorned the cake and the top tier held the 90th emblem also in pink. Mrs. Laura Bentley, 88, of Pelham received the certificate for the oldest relative present. She is the sister of Mrs. Avent. A grandson from Michigan and his five month old daughter received certificates for the most distance travelled. Sheri Lynn was also the youngest direct descendent present. A highlight of the day was greeting cards from President and Mrs. Richard Nixon and and also Governor and Mrs. Jimmy Carter which were presented to her and read by Senator Bethel Salter whose family were guests of the day. Reverend M.T. Salter was also in attendance. Though it was requested "no gifts", Mrs. Avent received many lovely and useful gifts. She wore a pink knit dress complimented by an orchid corsage which was a gift from Mr. and Mrs. I. F. Carter of Americus. Mrs. Avent was married to John Fletcher Avent who died October 5, 1934 in Mitchell County, Georgia.
