Mr. John B. Acree, of Mitchell county, returned from the war on the second Sunday in May, 1865, and started farming again with 125 acres of common open pine land. He had 37 head of cattle, and two old gray horses, four bales of cotton, for which he realized $500, and $75 in silver. He now owns 625 acres of land, having purchased 500 acres more, for which he paid $1,600, five good mules and horses, 48 head of cattle, and $3,000 or $4,000 in money out at interest. He has ten in his family, has lived well, and educated his children. He makes an average of four to five bales of cotton to a plough, and 250 bushels of corn to a plough; makes all his own syrup, meat, &c., at home. Up to 1869 he did his own work, and had no negroes or other help upon his place. His cotton crop has always been a surplus, and hence his success. His expenses have been paid out of his other crops. Mr. Acree furnishes a good example of how energetic farming, in southwestern Gerogia, with supplies raised at home, and a small crop of cotton for profit, will lead to independence and success.
