Camilla, Georgia. Mrs. Mittie Spence, one of Camilla's oldest and dearly loved citizens, passed away at her house on North Harney Street on Thursday, 28 May 1925, afternoon after an illness of 2 weeks from paralysis. A large number of relatives, neighbors and friends of this good woman were about her bedside when the end came quietly at 3:30 PM. Her health had been failing for the past year and several weeks ago she was suddenly taken ill with an attack of dizziness and lay prostrate for a week, when a paralytic stroke followed. Though she rallied at times, there was small change in her condition as she gradually slipped out about two weeks following her stroke. Funeral services were held at the Baptist church Friday, 29 May 1925, at 10:00 AM, attended by a large number of loved ones and friends of the deceased and the sweet and comforting old hymns of the church were sung by the choir. The pall bearers were Messrs. W. D. Palmer, G. C. Burson, G. B. Baggs, L. D. Baggs, W. H. Baggs and Joe Sanders Collins. Interment was in the family lot in Oakview Cemetery. From point of residence, Mrs. Spence was one of Camilla's oldest citizens, having been born and reared in this county and having lived in Camilla from her young lady hood up to the time of her death. She was about 68 years of age when the years of her useful life came to an end. She was a daughter of the late Mr. Daniel Palmer and a sister of the late Messrs. J. H. and J. B. Palmer, all prominent and beloved citizens of Camilla in the years gone by. When quite young she was happily united in marriage to Dr. W. A. J. Spence, brother of Dr. J. M Spence, who preceded her to the grave 43 years ago, leaving her with their son Mr. Roscoe Spence, then a small child. Mrs. Spence was a woman of strong Christian character, which bore the test of the long years. She was a lifetime member of the Baptist church, and was always loyal to its interests and affairs. Though she lived her life quietly, her good works and gentle influence through friendly deeds and ministration, year after year, have caused her to be loved and touched and helped. Her passing has caused a general sorrow in Camilla, for no one can remember having seen her face without the pleasant smile she always carried, or her voice without the same cheery note, characteristics that will live long in the hearts of her loved ones and friends. Mrs Spence has an unusually large connection of near relatives to mourn her loss. The entire community extends sympathy to Mr. Spence and his family in their loss.
