Camilla, Georgia. Mr. George W. Palmer, Tax Receiver of Mitchell County and one of the county's most popular and highly regarded officials, died at his home near Camilla last Friday, 26 Mar 1926. at 1:30 AM, following an illness of only one week from influenza and pneumonia. Mr. Palmer's illness first took a serious turn on Wednesday night of last week, but the next morning he appeared to be considerably improved and this improvement continued throughout the day Thursday, with the result that the members of his family who watched at his bedside and the numerous friends who called at the home were much encouraged and hope for his recovery was greatly strengthened. About midnight Thursday night, however, he suffered a recurrence of the attack which gradually sapped his remaining strength and at 1:30 AM the end came. The news of Mr. Palmer's death came as a shock to the people of the county, many of whom had seen him only a few days before as he visited the various districts of the county on his first tax round of the year. It was while on this trip, engaged in the discharge of the duties of his office, that he contracted influenza which was to so quickly end his career. Mr. Palmer liked about one month of being 43 years of age. He was born and reared in this county and was a son of the late George Palmer, a pioneer citizen of this county. Always frail of body he was never the less a man of much energy and made a success as a farmer on the old place located near Camilla. IN 1924 he offered for Tax Receiver of the county and was elected by a very large vote of his friends and fellow citizens. He had served a little more than a year of his term when he was taken by death. He was an active member of several fraternal organizations and as a citizen exerted an influential on the moral side of all questions affecting the community in which he lived. Generous, kind and upright in all of his dealings with his fellow man, everyone who knew him loved him and to these the news of "little George's" death brought the deepest sorrow. Mr. Palmer is survived by his aged mother and 8 brothers and sisters, as follows: James L. Palmer, T. T. Palmer, Mrs. M. J. Akridge, Mrs. B. C. Williams, Miss Viola Palmer, Mrs. F. A. Jones, Mrs. Johnnie Eubanks, and Mrs. O. L. Davis. Funeral services were held at Mt. Zion Baptist church Sunday afternoon, 28 Mar 1926, at 2:30 PM and a large throng of sorrowing friends from all over the county gathered at the little country church to pay their respects to the dead. The services were conducted by Rev H. N. Burnett, assisted by Rev J. G. Graham and Rev H. W. Joiner. after the services at the church the casket was borne to the cemetery nearby by the Masonic brethren and the beautiful ceremonies of this order marked the final exercises at the grave. The pall bearers were: W. E. Hughes, Iverson Bennett, A. R. Roles, J. C. Smith, J. E. Hayes and B. H. Hurst. Many beautiful floral offerings gave evidence of the high esteem in which the deceased was held by his friends. The tenderest sympathy of a host of friends is extended the aged mother and the other family members of the bereaved family in this sorrow that has come to them.
