Camilla, Georgia. A grievous shock was experienced throughout the county Wednesday morning when it was learned that Mrs. Mattie Scaife Powell had died suddenly Tuesday, 20 Jun 1922, at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. L Pullen, at Cotton. Mrs. Powell had been quite feeble for 3 or 4 years and had been almost an invalid for the past several months, but was able to be up lately and was sitting on the porch at her daughter's home after supper Tuesday evening, when she was suddenly taken ill and fell over from her chair to the floor. She was carried in the house and placed on her bed but had already expired. Funeral services were held at Oakview cemetery Wednesday, 21 Jun 1922, at 4:00 PM in the presence of loved ones and friends of the deceased. Rev. E. M. Overby, pastor of the Pelham Methodist Church, conducted the service wit the assistance of Rev. J. H. House of Camilla. The deceased had passed her 79th milestone in life when she was called from a long and useful life to her reward in Heaven. She was born in Jasper County in 1843, moving with her parents later to Stewart County and then to Eufaula, Ala., where she spent part of her childhood as Miss Mattie Scaife, member of a large family of brothers and sisters. In her early young lady hood she was happily married to James Hilliard Powell with whom she lived for the 50 years before death severed the happy union about 8 years ago. Moving to Camilla soon after marriage Mr. and Mrs. Powell reared a large family of sons and daughters and were prominent in religious and community affairs for a long number of years. Mrs. Powell was a lifelong member of the Methodist church. Reared in a home noted for its piety, she became a Christian in early childhood. She was happy in her faith throughout the years. Mrs. Powell is survived by two sons Messrs. Claud G. Powell of Pelham and Roy R. Powell of Arlington and three daughters, Mrs. J. K. Pullen of Cotton, Mrs. I. P. Chapman and Mrs. M. M. Jones of Whigham. She leaves 20 grandchildren among who are Misses Montine and Mattie Belle Powell of Camilla. Mrs. J. C. Turner and Mrs. F. C. Lewis of Camilla are nieces. The entire community feels with the bereaved family the loss of this good woman and extend the hand of Christian sympathy to them.
