Luckey as written in "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 17 Nov 1939. Camilla, Georgia. Mr. Jonathan L. Luckey, 92, Mitchell County's last surviving Confederate Veteran, passed away Saturday morning at 3:00 AM at the home of his son, W.M. Luckey in Pleasant Hill community after an illness of several months. He had been confined to his bed since August. News of Mr. Luckey's death caused genuine sorrow among his hosts of friends throughout the county. For a number of years he has been a familiar figure at Confederate Memorial Day exercises when veterans of the Sixties were honored for their valiant service to the South, one by one, wearers of the Confederate Gray, who joined him on these happy occasions have passed on, and for the past three years Mr. Luckey has been the county's last veteran. Funeral services took place Sunday at 2:00 PM at Pleasant Hill Church, conducted by Rev. Will M. Davis of Meigs, Ga. Interment was in the family lot in the church yard. Pall bearers, all nephews of the deceased, were Julius Palmer, Charlie Palmer, Ben Hill Palmer, Louis Collins, William Collins, Jim Culpepper, Alfred Luckey and Tom Luckey. J.J. White of Camilla Funeral Home was in charge of arrangements. Mr. Luckey had passed his ninety-second birthday when his long and worthy life came to an end. He was born in Mitchell County and spent his entire life here. He was the son of the late Mr. and Mrs. Seab Luckey, pioneer settlers in this section. Mr. Luckey enlisted for service in the Confederate Army in early young manhood, serving with distinction with the famous Campbell Siege Artillery. Returning home from the war, he was married to Miss Missouri Collins, of this county, who preceded him in death many years ago. Inheriting the profession of farming from his father, Mr. Luckey centered his life's activities on the farm, where his diligence at work, quiet fine qualities in the home, neighborhood and church marked his as a worthwhile life. He a been a member of the Baptist church for many long years. Mr. Luckey was beloved by numbers of friends, who are grieved by his passing and whose warm and sympathy is extended to members of the bereaved family. Mr. Luckey is survived by his son, W.M. Luckey, with whom he made his home, and there are eight grandchildren and four great grandchildren. Surviving sisters are Mrs. Seab Palmer of Camilla and Miss Winnie Luckey of Cotton.
