Camilla, Georgia. Mr. Jonah Palmer, beloved citizen of Mitchell County and until recently serving the county as Treasurer, passed away at his home in Pelham last Friday, 20 Nov 1931, morning at 5:00 AM. Though the announcement carried sorrow in every corner of the county the end was not unexpected, as Mr. Palmer had been seriously ill for some time and he had talked about it with friends who visited him, expressing resignation to meet the inevitable and a Christian's confidence in the future. Mr. Palmer was close to eighty years of age and had spent practically his entire life in the county. He loved his friends and never lost an opportunity to mingle with them at public gatherings held throughout the county. In his youth he was a noted singer and for many years headed the organization in this county sponsoring the singing conventions. He served the county for nearly twenty years as treasurer, being reelected several times without opposition. Recently he was forced to give up his office on account of the condition of his health. He was a faithful public servant, a man of old fashioned standards of honesty and integrity and enjoyed the confidence and esteem of all who knew him. Funeral services were held at the City Cemetery in Pelham last Saturday, 21 Nov 1931, morning, the open air service being necessary to accommodate the large number of people who attended. The services were conducted by H. N. Burnett, Rev S. O. Thomas and Rev C. C. Kiser. A quartette composed of Mr. Kiser, Mrs. Mays, Mr. Conner and Mr. Herring sang several of Mr. Palmer's favorite hymns. Mr. Palmer is survived by his wife and three children, Mr. Wright Palmer and Mrs. Julius Pickron of Pelham and Millwood Palmer of Macon. Those acting as pall bearers were: Messrs J. J. Harris, M. M. Payne, A. L. Wilder, D. A. Gandy of Pelham; E. M. Davis, G. B. Baggs and Judge Ben T. Burson of Camilla.
