Mrs. Mary Baker, one of the oldest residents of the county, died Friday, 3 Apr 1931, at 5:30 AM at the home of her daughter, Mrs. J. L. Palmer, after and illness of two weeks. The news of her death spread grief through the neighborhood in which she has lived for more than fifty years. Mrs. Baker was 83 years of age, and a native of Mitchell county. In 1866 she married John Baker, who served with the militia during the War Between the States. He preceded her to the grave thirty-six years ago. She is survived by one daughter, Mrs. J. L. Palmer, ten grandchildren and five great grandchildren, and one brother, Mr. J. L. Akridge, of near Cairo, besides several nieces and nephews. The funeral was held at 10:00 AM Saturday, 4 Apr 1931, conducted by Rev H. N. Burnett, assisted by Rev W. T. Halstead, pastor of the First Baptist Church of Camilla. Interment was made at the Akridge cemetery. Her oldest brother was the first to be buried in this cemetery, which bears the family name. Those acting as pallbearers were: Mr. Hoggard Faircloth, Mr. B. M. Archibold, Mr. Clyde Dewitt, Mr. J. C. Palmer, Mr. J. A. Palmer and Mr. John C. Phillips. The funeral was in charge of J. R. Bramlett of the Camilla Hardware and Implement Company.
