Mr. Walter M. Acree, prominent farmer and beloved citizen of this community, died at his home in this city last Sunday, 23 Feb 1930, evening at six o'clock after an illness of several months. The end, although not unexpected, brought sorrow to a host of friends throughout this section who realized not only a heavy personal loss, but will also be a loss to the community that will be long felt. Mr. Acree's last illness began last fall, although he had been in failing health for several years, and for the past several months he has been confined to his home. Recently there had appeared some improvement in his condition, but last Friday evening he suffered an attack from which he began to sink and never rallied. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday, 25 Feb 1920, morning at ten o'clock. The simple but impressive service was conducted by Rev H. W. Joiner, of Sylvester, a former pastor of the Camilla Methodist church, assisted by Rev. A. W. Rees and Rev. W. T. Halstead. An impressive feature of the service was the rendering of several old hymns that were favorites of the deceased by the choir composed of Mrs. D. V. Thompson, Miss Virginia Davis, Mrs. G. L. Wade, Mr. O. O. Worley and Mr. A. J. Pinson, with Mrs. J. C. Palmer acting as accompanist. A touching tribute to the life of the deceased was paid by Rev. Joiner. The room in which the casket rested was banked high with beautiful floral offerings which mutely attested the love and esteem of many sorrowing friends. Interment was in the family lot in Oakview cemetery. Active pallbearers were: B. H. Jenkins, Dan Palmer, P. C. Cullens, E. J. Vann Jr., Dr. B. E. Carlisle, F. A. Brown, Leon Perry and T. G. Brooks. The honorary pallbearers were: W. L. Butler, G. B. Baggs, W. H. Bullard, C. D. Crow, Dr. J. A. McDaniel, R. M. Fleming, T. G. Tyson and W. E. Holton. Walter Maxwell Acree was 58 years of age. His entire life was spent in this community. His parents, the late John B. and Martha Acree were among the pioneers of this county and a large part of the estate originally settled upon by his parents was held by the deceased at the time of his death. He was brought up on a farm and never engaged in other occupation and he was rated as among the best farmers in the county. Mr. Acree married Miss Effie Elizabeth Adams October 27, 1896, his wife preceding him to the grave about two years ago. Five children survive as follows: Mrs. Howell E. Newton of Forsyth; Misses Mamie Sue, Martha and Aurora Acree of this place; and Mr. W. G. Acree of Savannah, and one sister, Mrs. J. L. Brown of this city. He was a member ot the Methodist church and evidenced a deep interest in religion which afforded him greaat comfort and confidence in spite of physical infirmaties and the great sorrow that he suffered when his beloved wife was taken. Brave and strong in the battles of life, he was gentle and affectionate with family and friends and his generous heart warmed quickly in the presence of need or distress, even among the humblest of his acquaintances, which included the number of colored people who lived on his plantation. He was a good man and a good citizen and the entire community mourns his loss. Among the out-of-town relatives and friends who attended the funeral were: Mrs. W. F. Quillian and Mrs. M. M. Acree of Macon; Mrs. W. F. Stoudenmire of Deland, Fla.; Mrs. W. B. Cochran and Mrs. Fred Scott of Thomasville; Mr. and Mrs. Oscar Clark, Mrs. Nellie Baughman and Mis Eugenia Baughman of Dothan, Ala.; Mr. and Mrs. Charles Yates and Mis Inez Minter of Macon; Rev. Geo. M. Acree of Cordele; Mr. W. G. Acree of Savannah; Mr. John Morgan of Pelham; Mr. and Mrs. John Johnson and Mr. Gordon Johnson of Meigs.
