Relatives and friends here and throughout Georgia and Florida were saddened to hear of the death of Mrs. Amanda Gantt High, former resident of Camilla and Mitchell County, which occurred at the home of her daughter, Mrs. T. O. Poitevint at Williston, Florida, Sunday, 18 January 1948, night after a long illness of a period of eleven months. Mrs. High was 82 years old and a native of Mitchell County where she grew up on a farm a few miles south of Camilla, the daughter of the late Judge Lafayette Gantt and a neighbor to the Reverend Underwood's family. In 1883 she married William J. Shiver, who was stricken with typhoid fever leaving her a young widow with five children. She was married later to Jackson Poitevint, who in a few years passed on and she was married in 1915 to Mr. J. G. High of Mt. Zion community who preceded her 31 years in death. For the last 30 years she has made her home with her daughters and son, where she spent many useful hours with her grandchildren and numerous friends. Funeral services took place Tuesday, 20 Jan 1948, at 2:30 PM at the First Baptist Church in Camilla with Reverends P. J. Keadle and Charles Duncan officiating. Interment followed in Oakview Cemetery with Mr. J. R. Bramlett in charge. Serving as pallbearers were grandsons of the deceased, Paul Parker Jr. of Camilla, Garett Swindell of Okeechobee, Fla., Frank Shiver of Albany, Dudley Parker of Thomasville, Neal Shiver of Camilla and one grandson-in-law, Aubrey Wade of Camilla. Surviving is one brother Dr. John L. Gantt of Houston, Tx.; three daughters, Mrs. T. O. Poitevint of Williston, Fla., Mrs. Paul Parker of Camilla, Mrs. Ira J. Swindell of Okeechobee, Fla., and one son, Troy Shiver of Camilla and 20 grandchildren and 13 great grandchildren.
