Camilla, Georgia. Mrs. William D. Palmer, prominent and beloved Camilla woman, died at her country home on the Newton Road Monday, 31 May 1943, at 11:00 AM following a long illness. Several weeks ago she underwent an operation, after which she seemed to improve but lost ground she had gained. In recent days her condition had been acute and little hope was held out for her recovery. Through all her long illness she made a brave and valiant fight, never complained or lost her courage, carrying to the last the same sunshiny smile and tender appreciation for loving attention of her family and friends during her illness. Funeral services took place Wednesday, 2 Jun 1943, at 4:00 PM at the Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, Rev S. H. Bennett. Sorrowing friends and relatives filled the church auditorium and the flowers in great quantities and beauty of arrangement filled the entire space available within the chancel. Comforting hymns were beautifully sung by the church choir. Pall bearers were Dan Palmer, Frank Tyson, Carl Phelps, John Maples, W. W. Bullard, Crawford Collins, James Holton and Lewis Collins. Interment was in the family lot in Oakview Cemetery. Mrs. W. D. Palmer was the former Miss Julia May Spence, youngest daughter of the late Wiley Spence and Nellie Howard Spence. She was born 18 Nov 1887 and moved with her parents and sisters to Camilla when a little girl and spent the remainder of life here. When a young and beautiful girl of sixteen she was married 9 Nov 1904 to William Daniel Palmer, with whom she had lived in happy union for nearly 39 years. She was a born home maker and loved the things that make up a happy home and brought up a family of fine boys and girls to reflect honor and credit on their parents. She was proud to have three of her sons in the Armed Services for our country, one of them on foreign soil. Diligent about the many duties of the home, she was given to hospitality, was thoughtful of others, benevolent and kind. She met life with a smile and a song, was brave, cheerful and happy through dark days and fair and her example and influence meant much to those whose lives she had touched. She had been a member of the Baptist church since early in life, was faithful and consistent in her loyalty to the church and enjoyed its fellowship. Mrs. Palmer is survived by her husband and ten children; five daughters, Miss Carolyn Palmer of Albany; Miss Grace Palmer, member of the WAACS stationed at Daytona Beach, Fla.; Mrs. Charles Williford of Camilla and youngest daughters, Misses Hazel and Florence Palmer, living at home with their parents, and five sons, William O. Palmer, USA stationed at Battle Creek, Mich.; SSGT W. D. Palmer, Jr. stationed in Lincoln, Neb.; Pvt. Jos. H. Palmer stationed in North Africa and James Wiley Palmer and Frank Palmer of Camilla; and one grandchild, Jimmy Palmer. She leaves also two sisters, Mrs. W. C. Betts and Mrs. W. G. Mitchell both of Quincey, Fla.
