James Bryant Akridge, eighty-eight year old pioneer resident of Mitchell County, and resident of the Pebble City community, died at 2:00 AM Saturday, 16 Jul 1955, at Mitchell County Hospital following an extended illness due to infirmities of age. Mr. Akridge, who during his lifetime was one of this county's most prominent and prosperous farmers, had lived in the Pebble City community all of his life. He owned extensive farming interests, was a director of Pelham Banking Company, had served a period of nearly thirty years on the Mitchell County Board of Education, and was for a number of years a member of the Board of Stewards of the Antioch Methodist Church where he held membership and worshiped with his large family through the years. His wife, the former Miss Edna Eubanks, of Pelham, preceded him in death in 1942. Survivors include two daughters, Mrs. Hiram Caton of Sale City and Mrs. Mack Clark of Pelham; two sons, John Akridge of Pebble City and Clifford Akridge of Pelham; one sister, Miss Alice Akridge of Pebble City; one brother, Tom Akridge of Pebble City. Funeral services were held Sunday, 17 Jul 1955, afternoon at Antioch Methodist Church in Pebble City. The Rev J. B. Gresham of Camilla and the Rev Willie Brown of Doerun officiated at the final rites. Interment followed in Akridge cemetery. Serving as pall bearers were Paul Smith, Phil Akridge, Bill Tom Edwards, Ralph Eubanks, Milward Eubanks, Leonard Eubanks, Von Eubanks and James Edwards.
