Camilla, Georgia. James Lamar Palmer, 78, pioneer citizen of Mitchell County, died at his country home near Camilla at 11:15 AM Wednesday, 18 Mar 1953. He had been in failing health for several years and had suffered two strokes last fall but had been able to go about. His final illness, several hours duration, came as a surprise but not entirely unexpected. Funeral services will be held this afternoon, 20 Mar 1953, at 3:00 PM at the residence. Rev Charles Duncan, pastor of the First Baptist Church, which he had attended, will officiate. Rev N. H. Williams will assist. Bramlett Funeral Home will be in charge of arrangements and interment will follow in Oakview cemetery. Survivors include his wife, the former Mary Ella Baker, with whom he was happily united 58 years ago; two sons, Alton and Donovan of Camilla; six daughters, Mrs. J. L. Gray, Mrs. B. M. Archibald, Mrs. A. J. Osteen, Mrs. Ermine Branch, all of Camilla, Mrs. Clyde Dewitt of Acworth, and Mrs. J. T. Alexander of Waverly Hall. Fourteen grandchildren and six great-grandchildren also survive. Born 78 years ago the son of the late George W. and Katherine Ford Palmer, James Lamar Palmer had spent his entire life in this county, had become one if its most prominent farmers and citizens., he served on the County Democratic Executive Committee a number of years, several as chairman. he was the oldest Mason in the county with 52 years membership in the organization which he headed as Worshipful Master for 12 years. Recently the Masons honored him on his 50 year membership. At the time of his death he was also the oldest Director of the GAS & C Railway.
