Camilla, Georgia. Mrs. Laura Twitty Palmer, wife of the late James Hilliard Palmer and Camilla's oldest and most beloved citizen, died at Mitchell County Hospital Friday, 27 November 1953, at the age of 92. Stricken ill Thursday she was carried to the hospital where her condition seemed to improve and then changed for the worse, the end coming suddenly. Sorrow and regret at her passing spread to every home in the community where she had lived for almost a century. Unusually active in civic, educational and church affairs through the long years, and held in warm affection by myriads of friends who had known her companionship and tender ministry, she was truly Camilla's "first lady." Unselfish, kind and happy, she lived a full life up to the very end, her loveliness of soul and interest in people and affairs about her never failing. Mrs. Palmer was the daughter of the late Dr. John Barbour and Nannie Flake Twitty and was a native of Mitchell County. She was a graduate of LaGrange College and in her young ladyhood served as school and music teacher. A lifelong member of the Baptist Church she had served in many offices in her life and was an honorary member of Camilla Garden Club. Mrs. Palmer was Mitchell County's oldest Gold Star mother. Funeral services took place Sunday, 29 Nov 1953, afternoon at the First Baptist Church, conducted by the pastor, the Rev Charles C. Duncan, who was assisted by the Rev N. H. Williams. The large auditorium was crowded to capacity with friends and relatives and the large numbers of floral pieces evidenced love and sympathy of friends. Grandsons of Mrs. Palmer served as pallbearers. They were James Lee Adams, Joe Barbour Adams, Dr. Carroll P. Adams, E. K. Harrell, Jr., Hartley Palmer, Dan Palmer, Jr., Tom Palmer, Jr., and Neill Palmer. Interment was in the family plot in Oakview Cemetery. Survivors include two sons, Tom C. Palmer, Sr. and Dan Palmer, Sr. both of Camilla; and six daughters, Mrs. W. C. Adams, Mrs. Grover C. Burson, Mrs. Fort Baker and Mrs. E. K. Harrell of Camilla, Miss Louise Palmer of Camilla and Albany, and Mrs. Iverson Bennett of Mobile, Ala.. One brother, Thomas Baker Twitty, Sr. of Camilla survives also and there are eighteen grandchildren and twenty-four great grandchildren..
