Camilla, Georgia. Mrs. John M. Maples, Sr., widow of the late John Maples who served as Sheriff of Mitchell County for a number of years, died instantly of multiple head and chest injuries last Saturday, 1 Jun 1968, afternoon in a crash several miles from Camilla on the Hawthorne Trail. Mrs. Maples, age 60, was driving along on Georgia Highway 112 when the car suddenly careened off the road and struck two large oak trees a short distance from the Howard Palmer home. There were no other cars involved in the accident and it has not been determined exactly what happened. Trooper W. D. Fielding of the Thomasville State Patrol office investigated the accident and said that the mishap occurred at about 3:45 P. M. She was pronounced dead on arrival at Mitchell County Hospital. Her death Georgia's accidental death toll to at least 18 for the first three days of the long Memorial Day weekend holiday. News of Mrs. Maples death spread rapidly over the town and county and brought grief and sorrow to a large number of friends along with surviving relatives. Funeral services were held Monday, 3 Jun 1968, morning at 11:00 A.M., at the Camilla Methodist Church with Rev. Ernest Seckinger officiating, assisted by Rev Edgar T. Davis Jr. Burial was held in the Oakview Cemetery with Bramlett Funeral Home of Camilla in charge of arrangements. Frank Vann, Bud Williford, Alva Crow Jr., Andy Morrell, Morris Kolbie, and Keaton Cox served as pallbearers. Mrs. Maples had lived in Camilla all her life, moving from Spalding County at the age of one year. She was the daughter of the late Lewis Shelton and Daisy Beall Eidson. She was the wife of the late John Milledge Maples. She was a member of the Camilla Methodist Church. She is survived by two brothers, Mr. Henry Eidson and Mr. Walter Eidson of Camilla, three sisters, Mrs. James Wiley Palmer, Mrs. Lucien Bush and Mrs. Hesikiah Burnett of Camilla; three grandchildren; several nieces and nephews.
