Camilla, Georgia. Johnnie Emory Shirah celebrated his 80th birthday Saturday afternoon, 14 Nov 1970 at the Mitchell Convalescent Center in Camilla with every one of his children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren present for the happy family affair. None of his family was missing. Members of the family said he seemed to be alert and enjoyed the occasion. Mr. Shirah died quietly in his sleep early Monday morning, 16 Nov 1970, there at the Convalescent Center where he had been a resident for some time. Funeral services for the prominent Mitchell County native who held extensive farming interests in the Hopeful area, and who took an active part in church, social and community affairs during his early years, were held Tuesday afternoon, 17 Nov 1970, at the Hopeful Baptist Church. He had held membership in the Hopeful Baptist Church for many years and his pastor, Rev Melvin York officiated at the services. Interment was in the church cemetery with pallbearers including Donnie Shirah, Louie Shirah Jr., Kenneth Harmon, Charles Partin, Billy Bingham and Ferrell Shirah. Bramlett Funeral Home of Camilla was in charge of funeral arrangements. He was born 12 Nov 1890, in Mitchell County, son of the late George W. Shirah Sr. and Martha Ann Chance Shirah. His wife preceded him in death some years ago. Survivors include two sons, G. Emory Shirah of Camilla and Clifford W. Shirah of Albany; two daughters, Mrs. E. S. Burch of College Park, Ga. and Mrs. J. F. Harmon Jr. of Camilla; one brother, Carl Shirah of Bainbridge; four sisters, Mrs. B. B. Maples and Mrs. Floyd Taylor of Camilla, Mrs. J. C. Harmon of Bainbridge and Mrs. Lucille Jackson of Tifton. Thirteen grandchildren and sixteen great-grandchildren also survive.
