Pelham, Georgia. James Lester Piland, Code Enforcement Officer for the City of Pelham, and long time resident of Pelham died at his home here January 11th after a lengthy illness. Funeral services were held January 13th at 3 o'clock at the Braswell Funeral Home Chapel with Rev. Harold J. Combs officiating. Interment was in the Pinecrest Memory Gardens. Mr. Piland was born in Albany, Ga., on February 12, 1912 but came to Pelham with his family at a very young age. He attended Pelham High school where he was outstanding on the football field and basketball court. For many years he was a plumbing contractor. When the City adopted the building code several years ago, Mr. Piland was appointed as Building Official, a position he held until his death. He was a member of the First Baptist Church of Pelham. He was a loyal and faithful member of his church and was active in all phases of Church work. He was active in civic affairs, being a long time member of the Pelham Civitan Club and was First Vice President of the Ga. State Plumbers Association. He was the son of the late W. T. and Ella Musselwhite Piland. On May 10, 1933 he was married to Miss Janie Mae Fitzgerald of Camilla. To this union four chldren were born, three sons and one daughter. He is survived by his wife, his step-mother, Mrs. W. T. Piland of Pelham; three sons James L. Piland, Jr. and Charles G. Piland of Pelham, Gerald T. Piland of Buford, S. C. One daughter, Mrs. Donald Taylor of Pelham. Six grandchildren and one great grandchildren survive. His two brothers are Fred S. Piland of Decatur, Ala., and Jesse F. Piland of Albany. His four sisters are Mrs. Marie Moore of Seattle, Wash., Mrs. Ella Mae Segler of Ochlochnee, Mrs. Ralph Scott, of Thomasville and Mrs. Ernest Howze of Pelham. Pallbearers were Bill Lemacks, Jack Baker, Willard Henry, Allen Eubanks, Gifford Flynt, Sr., and Albert Whaley. Braswell Funeral Home in charge.
