Shirah Sr. as written in "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 4 Oct 1989. Camilla, Georgia. Carl J. Shirah Sr, 81, of Bainbridge, Ga. died Tuesday, 26 Sep 1989. Funeral services were held at 2:00 PM Thursday, 28 Sep at Cox Funeral Chapel with the Rev. Luther Hasty and Dr. Carl Blankenship officiating. Burial was in Brinson Cemetery. Shirah was born in Mitchell County on 7 February 1908, and lived in Decatur County for the past 64 years. He was a service engineer with Miller Hydro Company of Bainbridge for 50 years until his retirement in 1980. He was also a member of the Highway Freewill Baptist Church. Survivors include his wife Ruth Yeates Shirah of Bainbridge; two daughters, Louise Marshall of Bainbridge and Grace Holt of Tampa, Fla; a son, Carl J. Shirah Jr. of Bainbridge; three sisters, Ruby Maples of Savannah, Lucille Jackson of Brookfield, and Sadie Mae Taylor of Camilla; eight grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren. Active pallbearers were James Stabler, Donnie Yeats, Hill Yeats, Robert Smith, James Williamson and Edward Smith. Honorary pallbearers were John Timmons, B.B. Dixon Jr., Lester Donalson, Henry Ethridge, Hiawatha Gleaton, Raliegh Rollins, Vance Custer, Vernon Dasher, Skeet Olive, W.M. Coyle, Ed Ruffin and H. G. Farnell. Cox Funeral Home in Bainbridge had charge of arrangements.
