Camilla, Georgia. The funeral service for William Austin "Billy" Phelps, a former city councilman and owner of Phelps Hardware, was held Friday at 2:00 PM at the Camilla United Methodist Church. Burial was in Oakview Cemetery. Phelps died Wednesday 26 August 1992, at the Phoebe Putney Hospital in Albany. Phelps, the son of the late King Phelps and Mollie West Phelps, was a native of Mitchell County. He was born 21 Feb 1921, in Sale City. Phelps was a member of the Camilla United Methodist Church where he formerly served as member of the administrative board. He was a member of the Jay Gardner Sunday School Class. Phelps was retired. He was the owner of the Phelps Hardware Company in Camilla, a company he founded in 1949. He also served on the Camilla City Council for many years. Survivors include his wife, Willie Pearl Rivers of Camilla, one daughter, Karen Patten of Albany; two sons, King Phelps of Albany and Jim Phelps of Sylvester; three sisters, Irma Palmer of Tallahassee, Lois Peters of Albany and Mrs. Lee Collins of Baconton; and six grandchildren. Dr. John Beck and the Rev Ted Bass officiated at the service. Pall bearers were Malcolm Phelps, Dewey Phelps, Yates Peters, Pryor Connell, Merrill Jones and Morris Edwards. Members of the Jay Gardner Sunday School Class were honorary pall bearers.
