Albany, Georgia. SHERMAN, Texas--- Thelma S. McCarty French, previously of Camilla, Georgia, passed away Thursday, October 10, 2002, in Sherman, Texas, where she had resided for three years. A native of Mitchell County, she was born the daughter of Jesse C. and Emma Cook Shiver on August 4, 1918. Thelma is remembered by loved ones and friends for her devotion to her duties as a licensed nurse, caring for the sick in various hospitals in south Georgia and north Florida from 1968 until she retired in 1999. She last worked at Parkway Nursing Home in Pelham, Georgia. Thelma had two careers, the first in retail department stores in Camilla and the second in the nursing field. At the age of 50, when many people are thinking about retirement, Thelma realized her lifelong goal to become a nurse by going back to school in Valdosta to complete her secondary education eventually graduating from Valdosta Vocational School a LPN. Her husbands Thomas E. McCarty (1964) and Max O. French (1987) preceded her in death. Survivors include two daughters, Claudia McCarty Rhodes of Kennesaw, Ga., and Louise McCarty Barrs of Albany; one son, Thomas E. McCarty Jr. of Sherman, Texas; a sister, Bernice Shiver Tatum of Leesburg and one brother, Stanley Shiver of Quitman; much beloved were her seven grandchildren and seven great grandchildren. Family and friends are welcome at a memorial service that will be held at 2:00 p.m. at Pine Cliff Baptist Church Saturday.
