Camilla, Georgia. Casting a pall of sorrow over all of Mitchell County was the unexpected death early Wednesday morning of James Horton Branch, age 47, widely popular and highly esteemed Clerk of the Courts of Mitchell County. He had not been ill and had arisen early Wednesday to get up town to the polls on electionday, although unopposed in his candidacy for re-election to another term. While dressing he became ill and died almost immediately of a heart attack. He was born May 12, 1912 on a farm near Sale City, the son of Mr. and Mrs. Paula Albert Branch, his father having preceded him in death some years ago and his mother still residing in Sale City. He was married on December 16, 1932, to the former Miss Kathleen Hurst, of Cairo. Besides his mother and his wife he is survived by one son, Paul Alexander (Alex) Branch, stationed at Dobbins Air Force Base in Atlanta; two sisters, Mrs. John L. Goldschmeding of Philadelphia, Pa., and Mrs. Paul Scott of Dallas, Texas. Funeral plans Wednesday were awaiting arrival of these two sisters and his son from their distant homes. Mr. Branch was graduated from the schools at Sale City and afterwards attended the University of Georgia. He afterwards was a merchant in Sale City and later was associated with his father in the Office of Tax Collector of Mitchell County. Following this he worked for some years as a court reporter for the Albany Judicial Circuit, traveling from county to county for court terms along with Judge Carl Crow. Following the death of the late Orson G. Swindle, Sr., Clerk of the Courts for many years, Branch successfully sought the office which he has kept ever since. As an elected official he was held in only the highest regard, confidence and esteem of the public whom he served. He was a member of Camilla Methodist Church and at one time was Chairman of the Board of Stewards. He was known throughout the county for his love and interest in camellias doing a lot of work in grafting etc., this relaxing hobby of his making his home on Roosevelt Avenue in Camilla something of a show place because of the beautiful grounds. Just a few days ago the Cherokee Garden Club had placed their marker "Camilla's Beauty Spot of The Month" on the lawn of his home. Civic-wise Branch assumed his measure of responsibilities. For the past year he had served as Chairman of the Mitchell County Cancer Society and was getting ready to get the annual Crusade off to a start within the next few days. Funeral services will be Friday morning at 10:30 at Camilla Methodist Church, interment in Oakview Cemetery.
