Camilla lost one of its pioneer women residents when Mrs. Hardy Pendleton Butler, Sr. died at the age of 79 Monday morning at Mitchell County Hospital where she had spent the past few weeks in critical condition following a stroke. Funeral services were held Tuesday afternoon at 2:30 o'clock at the residence with Rev. Louis Spivey, pastor of Camilla Methodist Church, officiating and being assisted by Rev. N. H. Williams. Interment followed in Oakview Cemetery by the side of her husband who had died back in 1916. Serving as pallbearers were Bill Bennett, Alvin Wight of Cairo, W. B. Wight of Albany, Dr. Clyde Stevenson, Jr., Bennett Lewis, Edwin Rackley, Sr. Bramlett Funeral Home of Camilla was in charge of arrangements. Mrs. Butler, the former Miss Arkie Bennett, had spent her entire life in Mitchell County. She was born seventy-nine years ago, the daughter of the late W. L. Bennett and Parmelia Adams Bennett, on the old Bennett home place near town where Mr. and Mrs. Dan Palmer, Jr. now farm and make their home. After her marriage to Mr. Butler she went to live on the Butler place near town on the Hopeful road and continued to live there and raise her family of children after his death many years ago. She was a lifelong member of Camilla Methodist Church and was one of its most devoted members until infirmities of old age kept her from taking any active part in the life of the community. She is survived by three daughters, Mrs. Eloise B. McDonald of Camilla, Miss Gussie Butler of Camilla and Ft. Gaines, Ga., Mrs. C. E. Byrd of Darlington, S. C.; three sons, Robert Butler of Camilla, H. P. Butler, Jr. of Headland, Ala., and Bennett Butler of High Springs, Fla.; four grandchildren, Butler McDonald of Camilla, Miss Betty Byrd of Darlington, S. C., Ann Pendleton Butler of Headland, Ala., and Jimmy Butler of High Springs, Fla. Also surviving is one sister-in-law, Mrs. T. R. Bennett of Atlanta.
