Davis Dies Very Suddenly Causing widespread sorrow throughout the county Tuesday afternoon, July 24, 1933, was the news that Mrs. Madge Ivey Davis, wife of Mr. Ivey C. Davis, of Hopeful, one of the most generally loved women of the county, had passed away at noon Tuesday at the Alford Hospital in Bainbridge. News of Mrs. Davis’ death was a grievous shock to many as her illness was not generally known. Mrs. Davis had been in bad health for some time and went to the hospital last week, where she underwent surgery about the middle of the week and seemed to be getting along all right. Early this week her condition took a backward turn and she continued to grow worse until the end came Tuesday. The body was brought to the home of Mr. and Mrs. George A. Burson, the old Ivey home, where Mrs. Davis was born and reared, and the funeral took place there Wednesday afternoon at 2 o’clock in the presence of hundreds of sorrowing friends from Hopeful, Camilla, and many other sections of the county, where the deceased was known and loved. The services were conducted by the Rev. J.I.D. Miller, who was assisted by Rev. Carswell. Loved old hymns of Christian faith were sung by the chior. The floral offerings, unusually numerous and beautiful, attested mutely to the love and sympathy of friends for the stricken family. After services at the home, the body was carried to Oakview Cemetery and laid to rest in the Ivey family lot. The pallbearers were Messrs. Roy Stripling, R. S. Rice, H. V. Davis, Geo. A. Burson, Ralph Davis, and F. C. Davis. A large number of friends and relatives from a distance attended the funeral. Mr. and Mrs. R. S. Rice and family and others from Arlington, Mrs. C. C. Willis, Mr. and Mrs. A. B. Conger and others from Bainbridge, a large number from Newton and friends from other places. From Hopeful, Mrs. Davis’ home community, where she is much loved, almost everyone was present, a number of colored people going to show their love for “Miss” Madge. Mrs. Davis was 42 years of age when death cut short a worthy and useful career of fine womanhood. She was Miss Madge Ivey, youngest daughter of Mrs. Ida Taylor Ivey and the late Mr. Lynn Ivey. She was happily married to Mr. Ivey C. Davis of Hopeful, where she spent her entire married life. Happy and sunshiny of nature, she loved everyone and took a keen delight in working in the interest of others. She fell easily into community leadership with the women and served her church, the school, and community affairs with a joyous devotion. She was always ready to join in any enterprise of pleasure and benefit to others. The price of such a good woman can never be measured. Her influence will live in the years to come in the lives and hearts of those she has touched with her happy love and service. Mrs. Davis had been a member of the Baptist Church since girlhood and loved the church and all of its institutions deeply, giving to it her true and loyal service as long as she lived. She was a devoted wife and mother, a chum with her children, and a friend to her every acquaintance. Relatives and numerous friends are disconsolate in the loss of such a friend, but are richer for having known her. Surviving Mrs. Davis are her husband and five children, the eldest Miss Martha Davis, a young girl of seventeen, and four little boys. She also leaves her mother, Mrs. Ida T. Ivey, three brothers, Cecil T. Ivey, Camilla, Reed Ivey and Gordon Ivey, Homestead, Florida, and three sisters, Mrs. R. S. Rice, Arlington, Mrs. George A. Burson, Camilla, and Mrs. W. M. Bradley of Homestead, Florida File at: http://files.usgwarchives.net/ga/mitchell/obits/d/davis684nob.txt This file has been created by a form at http://www.genrecords.net/gafiles/ File size: 4.2 Kb
