Shirah as written in "The Camilla Enterprise" dated 25 Apr 1919. Camilla, Georgia. Mr. A. G. Shirah died at his home near Baggs Ferry on Friday, 18 Apr 1919. Morning at about 8:00 AM after an illness of several weeks. He had been in a dying condition for several days, the end expected at any time. In addition to the grief and anxiety experienced by his family as they waited by his bedside, they were plunged into the deepest sorrows of their lives by the tragedy on the river two weeks ago, in which two of Mr. Shirah's daughters, Mrs. Warren Battle and Mrs. Joel High, his son-in-law and grandchild lost their lives. Mr. Shirah died without knowing of their deaths. Funeral services took place at Pleasant Hill on Saturday, 19 Apr 1919, morning at 11:00 AM. Rev H. N. Burnett conducted the obsequies in an impressive manner after which the Masonic lodge took charge, burying the body with all the honors of the order. The funeral was attended by a large number of people from all over the county. Mr. Shirah was born and reared in this county and had lived for a long number of years near Flint. He had only been living at the place where he died since about the first of the year. He had passed his 68th birthday. He was well known throughout the county and generally beloved. Mr. Shirah was one of our best citizens. He filled his place in the home, in the affairs of his community and his county as only a true citizen and a Christian can. He was a lifelong member of the Baptist church and had worshiped at Pleasant Hill for a number of years. The deceased is survived by his widow and nine daughters, Mrs. George Faircloth, Mrs. Floyd Fowler, Mrs. Pete Luckey, Mrs. Clarence Vines, Mrs. Carl Rackley, Mrs. D. W. Adams, Mrs. Brady Williams, Sr., Mrs. Moye Mansfield and Mrs. Miles Mansfield, all of this county. The Enterprise joins the many friends in extending sympathy to the bereaved family, who have such a heavy load of sorrow to bear.
