Camilla, Georgia. Camilla was greatly shocked Tuesday, 25 Aug 1908, afternoon last when it was announced on the streets that Mr. James H. Palmer had, at 1:00 PM, died at his home on Scott Street, after an illness of only two days. Mr. "Son" Palmer, as he was more familiarly known among his neighbors and friends, was one of Camilla's most prominent citizens and a man universally respected throughout the county for his genial disposition and upright character and in his straight forward dealings with his fellow man. He was a member of the Missionary Baptist church in Camilla and was always loyal to his church and his home town, having served the city with honor and ability as Mayor for one or more terms. Mr. Palmer was preceded to the grave about four months ago by his elder brother, Mr. J. B. Palmer, and ever since that sad event he has been more or less despondent because of his physical condition., he weighing about 330 pounds. It is said that he remarked to some of his intimate friends that he would not live through the year and when he was taken sick last Monday, he remarked to a friend that the end was near, but while it was known that he was a real sick man, yet it was not thought that he was in a critical condition, therefore his sudden demise was indeed a great shock to his family and the entire community. Mr. Palmer is survived by two sisters, Mrs. George Baggs and Mrs. Mittie Spence, his devoted wife and nine children, and to these loved ones the sympathy of the entire community is extended. The funeral services were held at the home at 10:30 AM Tuesday, 26 Aug 1908, conducted by his pastor, Rev B. W. Davis and were attended by a large concourse of relatives and friends, after which the interment was made at the new cemetery (Oakview). In the death of Mr. "Son" Palmer, the editor of the ENTERPRISE, has lost one of his best friends in Camilla, and to the sorrowing wife and children our heart goes out in sincere sympathy. Undertaker L. J. Hay looked after the interment and the following gentlemen acted as pall bearers: G. B. Cochran, J. L. Green, W. A. Bennett, T. R. Bennett, W. N. Spence, George Stripling, R. T. Cochran and Capt. John C. Turner.
