Stratford, 82 Portland, Maine Joseph E. Stratford, 82 of Alpine Road, died peacefully after a brief illness at St. Joseph’s Manor surrounded by his family on Tuesday, December, 17, 2002. He was born in Camilla,. Ga., a son of the late William Jackson and Lucile Black Stratford. and the grandson of the late Joseph L. and Hattie Collins Black of Mitchell County. He graduated from Pelham High School in Pelham, Ga., in 1938 and from Northeastern School of Accounting in 1947. He passedhis Certified Public Accounting exam in 1953. Mr. Stratford was a former partner of Richard F. Garland, CPA’S and a former partner of MacDonald, Page, Stratford and Strout, CPA’s. He retired in 1989 from the City of Portland as Chief Accountant. During World War II, Mr. Stratford served with the Army Air Corps from 1941-1945, serving in the Curopean Theater. He was called to serve during the Korean Conflict. Mr. Stratford was a life member of the American Institute of CPA’S; member and past president of the Maine Society of Public Accountants;member and past Presidents of the Woodfords Club of Portland; and a communicant of St. Joseph’s Catholic Church. He was a Civil War buff and enjoyed playing golf, gardening, traveling and spending time with his family.. He is survived by his wife Catherine M. Baum Stratford of Portland: two sons, Cary J. Stratford and his wife Rebecca of Alstead, N. H. and Harold W. Baum and his wife, DeeDee of Buxton; five daughters, Mrs. Ian (BetteAnn) Buchan of Woolwich, Mrs. Lawrence (Kathleen) Gross of Camden, Mrs James (Margaret Jane) Flaherty of Cumberland Foreside, Mrs. Richard (Maureen) Connolly of Portland and Mrs, Dennis (Pattrcia) Theriault of Sanford; a brother, W. Richard Stratford of Alpharetta, Ga.; and a sister Mrs. Russell (Polly Stratford) Smith of Bremen, GA.; 15 grandchildren; and a great-granddaughter. He was predeceased by a brother, Herman J. Stratford and two sisters, Mrs. James (Cherie Stratford) Smith and Mrs. Clinton (Elizabeth Stratford) DesRosier. Visiting hours will be held Friday 3-7 p.m. from the Jones, Rich & Hutchins Funeral Home, 199 Woodford Street, Portland. A Mass of Christian Burial will be celebrated Saturday at 11 a.m. from St. Joseph’s Catholic Church, Stevens Ave., Portland. Burial will follow in Evergreen Cemetery. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to St. Joseph’s Manor, 1133 Washington Ave., Portland Maine. 04103.
