H. Jones Dies As Result of Injury Prominent Citizen of This County Fatally Injured by Fall From Horse Mr. Augustus. H. (Gus) Jones, prominent citizen of Mitchell County, was thrown from a horse last Friday afternoon and sustained injuries from which he died at 12:30 o’clock Saturday night, November 26, 1921. The accident and the fatality following it brought sorrow to hundreds of people in the county, to whom the deceased was related and to friends with whom he had been associated for the past fifty years. The accident occurred about two o’clock Friday afternoon. Mr. Jones had started out horseback to look after his stock in a nearby field. He was accompanied by a negro, Hob Williams, who was also riding. After riding a short distance, Mr. Jones’ horse became unruly and started to run and he snatched the reins to stop him. The jerk caused the bits to break, and the horse, being released, broke into a gallop. Mr. Jones held on for some distance, but was finally thrown off, falling on his back. It is thought that his head struck a root, causing a fracture at the base of the skull. He was picked up unconscious by the negro and carried to his home a short distance away. Physicians were summoned and everything possible was done for the injured man, but to no avail, and death resulted Saturday night, the patient never regaining consciousness. Mr. Jones was 64 years of age and had spent his entire life in Mitchell County. It is doubtful if any man in the county had a wider acquaintanceship or a greater number of friends. He was a man of big heart and generous impulses and often used the means which he possessed to help some poor fellow who could not have found help anywhere else. When a fellow got into trouble and failed to get assistance from anyone else, he appealed to “Uncle Gus” and in nine cases out of ten, Mr. Jones came to the rescue. Among businessmen, Mr. Jones was regarded as a man of sound judgement whose ventures usually proved successful. He leaves an estate at considerably above $100,000. The funeral services were held at Pleasant Hill Baptist Church near the home of the deceased Sunday afternoon at 3 o’clock. Rev. S. O. Thomas conducted the services and delivered a most impressive sermon. Hardly half of the people who attended the funeral were able to get inside the church, and this in itself was a testimony of the esteem in which the deceased was held by his fellow citizens. After the sermon by the preacher in charge, Judge E. E. Cox and Rev. M. C. Taylor made short talks in which they paid high tribute to the memory of a departed friend. Following the services, interment was made in Pleasant Hill cemetery. Those acting as pallbearers were Gus Davis, Press Davis, Edgar Davis, Russell Jones, A. H. Jones, Jr., Hershell Davis and Roy Jones, all nephews of the deceased. Mr. Jones was never married. He was one of a family of four brothers and three sisters, but of these only two sisters survive him, Mrs. D. B. Davis, Camilla, and Mrs. Charles J. Davis, Hopeful. Three brothers, John, Jim, and Billy Jones, and one sister, Mrs. M. E. Jenkins, preceded him to the grave. In addition to his sisters, he is also survived by a number of nephews and nieces, as well as other more distant relatives. As a substantial citizen and businessman, Mr. Jones will be greatly missed in this community, but his loss will be felt greatest by those of less substantial means, both white and colored, who looked to him for financial aid and advice in their affairs, especially when trouble came and a strong hand was needed to give assistance.
