All rights reserved. http://www.usgwarchives.net/copyright.htm http://www.usgwarchives.net/ga/gafiles.htm ************************************************ File contributed for use in USGenWeb Archives by: Janet Sumner gws0675@peoplepc.com April 1, 2003, 12:04 pm Bainbridge Post-Search Light, Thursday, July 10, 1930 Garrett Thornton Drowns In River Mr. Garrett Thornton of Akron, Ohio was drowned last Saturday afternoon while in bathing in Flint River near the sand bar in the twelfth district of Mitchell County, with the young man at the time of the tragedy were his brother, Mr. Charlie Thornton of Vada, and Mr. Julian Bullard of Akron, Ohio, both of whom narrowly escaped drowning themselves in their effort to rescue Garrett who called for assistance when he was caught in a whirl or suck hole in the river. Mr. Charlie Thornton went to his brother's assistance and tried to pull him out of the whirl but Garrett realizing that they were both to be drowned released his brother and was immediately carried under by the current. Although an hour or more elapsed before the body was recovered from the river it was rushed -----(illegible)-----that the young man could be resuscitated but physicians at the hospital advised that it was hopeless. The deceased was a native of Mitchell County but for several years had been making his home in Akron, Ohio. He was taking his vacation and had arrived Saturday morning with other members of his family from Akron. Mr. Thornton was 30 years of age and was a son of the late J. T. Thornton of Vada. He was married in June 1920 to Miss Pauline Williams, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. H. T. Williams of Vada. He is survived by his wife and an eight year old son, Billy, and five sisters and brothers, Mrs. Lewis Hays, of Akron, Ohio; Miss Annie Thornton and Mr. Lawrence Thornton of Akron, Ohio; Mrs. Irwin Richardson of Bainbridge and Mr. Charlie Thornton of Vada. The deceased was a young man of fine character and was held in high esteem by all who knew him. His tragic death has brought sorrow to a host of friends in the community in which he was reared. Funeral services were held at Hopeful Tuesday morning at ten o'clock conducted by Rev. W. R. Brown, pastor of the Vada Methodist Church, assisted by Rev. G. T. Hunt, pastor of the Baptist Church of Hopeful. Interment was in the Hopeful cemetery. The active pallbearers were: Lewis Hays, Irwin Richardson, Max Williams, Charlie Thornton, Wade Oliver and Arnold Williams. The honorary pallbearers were H. J. Maddox, J. C. Lane, Cliff Brockett, M. A. Anderson, E. F. Vickers, and Guy Prescott, all of Bainbridge. The sincere sympathy of many friends is extended the bereaved family in this great sorrow.
